Most consumer goods, but also larger scale stuff! Construction now is ***way*** better quality than the 1980s (Insulation, wiring,, exterior wall sheathing, window seals, plumbing materials, HVAC systems) Some slop happened in the early 2000s boom, but build quality is way better now

No shade on the OP here but I would have absolutely predicted this effect Loneliness is not the absence of conversation. It’s the absence of connection.
John Holbein@johnholbein1.bsky.social · 14h agoBut the more interesting question is what happened downstream. Did talking to AI make people feel less lonely? Surprisingly, no! It did the opposite. It actually increased loneliness.
Kids asked for there to be a fresh sourdough sandwich loaf when they came home from school; so I had two on the counter when they came home i left the older two downstairs and then went upstairs for half an hour to play with the 5yo and talk about his day I came back and there was only one

My favorite version of this is around combat sports. I have seen so many men without any athletic training, whatsoever spout off about how they could probably beat Rhonda Rousey and, no, she would break your elbow and dislocate your shoulder before you realized that you were on the ground.

These are the type of examples I love to use when trying to illustrate group differences in my undergrad psychology classes.

Yeah, this is probably objectively true? I think vacuum cleaners are a nice example. The Electrolux that my Mom used for 30 years cost her like $500 in the very early 90s, which is comparable to the almost $1200 we paid for a German sebo vacuum in 2026
Max Dubler 🏳️🌈@maxdubler.com · 3d agoI think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.
I'd argue this has become even more of a problem in PhD admissions (at least in psychology) over the past few decades... programs/labs are increasingly unlikely to take promising but green students and more likely to take people who already have a demonstrated track record of skills and publishing

What LLMs can do in science is being undersold or actively ignored by the scientific community My larger concern is that AI does seem to enhance progress and discovery for scientists who already know how to think and do science, but will it simply undermine that core ability for new generations?

So many posters around here keep haw-hawing about R’s in strawberry and clearly have NO idea that these are extremely powerful machines *already* that we have not yet figured out how to utilize fully. If we stopped development today, they’d still be astonishing
I think I’ve averaged about 3 PI submissions and 3 co-I submissions per year over the last 10, which has been 25-40% of my writing time in my career… so if any billionaires that aren’t evil or (equally real) fairy god mothers want to endow my chair and research program, imagine what I could do!

Well, it’s been 10 years this month since my PhD was conferred, which I think means that I’m no longer earlier career by even the most generous standards
