Watching dominoes from Greece. Tech leader. Finnish reserves. Usually early in predictions. Occasionally wrong. Always post-mortem. Mapping the emergence of evergray wars between autocratic East and technocratic West, with EU in the crosshairs.

9/10 🇫🇮 Suomessa vastaavaa keskustelua käydään korkeintaan politiikan reunoilla. Väittelemme siitä, miten vanhaa mallia pitäisi soveltaa – emme siitä, toimiiko malli enää. Kukaan ei kysy ääneen, miksi samat lääkkeet eivät tunnu tehoavan, vaikka niitä annostellaan yhä uudelleen.

Ceuta, July 31st. 50,000 people directed to the border by Moroccan police. 96.6% returned the same day. The US Congress had pre-authorised $40M to Morocco two weeks earlier. No declaration of intent, no formal conflict. Just a weapon deployed and withdrawn. #EvergrayWars

I’ve had a lot of discussions last night about age gating social media. I’ll share an observation: For many Americans it boils down to simply not being able to trust their government or institutions in handling their identities. I feel for them. We in EU shouldn’t wait, but proceed.

Even smart people are sharing a drop of 5% in cohort use in first 90 days as proof age gating is a dead horse. Anti tobacco laws took decades to bite, and even today it’s an ongoing process. By comparison these interventions are fast and effective, even with platforms simply not complying.

Australia’s eSafety commissioner buried a report (released Friday afternoon) that shows the under 16 social media ban didn’t tangibly reduce teen social media use, and also resulted in parents tuning out of kids usage. We traded our privacy for no reason. theconversation.com/more-than-80...

And yet...if you want the EU to become more state-like, political and powerful there is a strong likelihood that European policy and politics will experience the kind of bog standard party polarisation that always afflicts member states on a supra-national level

EU Ministers discuss Schengen this week over a crisis that never threatened Europe's free-movement area: no one leaves Ceuta without a border check. Instead, the EPP & far-right allies use this manufactured crisis whose price was paid by real lives to attack Spain's different stance to migration.

Wrote this to LinkedIn, but might as well share here: Europe is currently rearming itself faster than it has done since the end of the cold war. The past 40 years have changed a lot in the industrial base that is trying to it though. We have two categories of defense industrial companies now:

Se se vasta olisi uutinen jos Suomen hallituksen joku edustaja edes joskus myöntäisi virheen. Mutta se ei kuulu heidän käsitteeseensä rehellisyydestä. Riikka Purra ja Mari Rantanen pelaavat 🇷🇺 pussiin kansallisen turvallisuuden nimissä yle.fi/a/74-2023909...

The EU right wing bloc is working to the benefit of the US government keen to divide EU. The wave of immigrants was not because of Spanish immigration policy, but because the US wanted to punish Spain for not allowing use of bases. Weaponized immigrants, first by 🇹🇷 and 🇷🇺, now 🇲🇦 suppprted by 🇺🇸.

Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez has learned a hard truth over the past few days: Once one of the EU’s most charismatic and influential leaders, he is now effectively a pariah in the bloc. Brussels Playbook knows more 👇

A lot of people complain EVs are not “car enough”. For me it’s the opposite. I always hated cars. I absolutely hate every mechanical piece and oily part, and the assumption that as a man I should know how it works, and how to fix it when it doesn’t. My EV is a solution to go from A to B.

Secretary General of the Estonian 🇪🇪 Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With the correct take. I'm not a huge fan of Spains PM Sánchez but in crises you support and help first, horse-trade after. Its not about personal politics, it about valuable ally and member of OUR #EU

I think Wildberries and AWS hits, and the way mainstream media accepts them, signals a shift in the Overton window when it comes to dual use facilities getting targeted. I wonder if EU defense bull run, ReArm Europe, which prioritizes dual use, takes this development into account?i

Okay, so the mandate is there, but the office is unmanned. This means the frontier labs will be running labs around the regulator, while pretending to comply. How about two things: 1) Improve compensation models 2) Re-examine eligibility criteria Tip: The world is moving faster than degrees.

The European Commission formed its AI safety unit two years ago to oversee the actions of the world’s leading artificial intelligence companies. This weekend, it will gain an arsenal of new regulatory powers.
