I helped a little bit with this, and while it's written for a settler audience it's still useful for Indigenous Peoples too. If there's interest maybe we can do a version that's more focused on Indigenous perspectives / rights / concerns etc. In the meantime I'll keep an eye out for other stuff

A new toolkit is out on data centre fights in Canada! It is very good! aicivilsociety.ca/ResistingAID... Read on for key info, tactics, and case studies, written by academics and activists in the trenches. #AI #Canada

The Walrus invited me to share initial impressions, alongside the awesome Starling Centre crew (eg Alissa Centivany, @jredden.bsky.social, @lukestark.bsky.social) & others. "AI for All" seems less an optimistic promise than a threat. The real slogan is: "AI will be adopted until morale improves." 🧵

Canada has unveiled its long-awaited national AI strategy, but experts say key questions around regulation, privacy, and accountability remain unanswered. Can Ottawa translate its AI ambitions into public confidence? https://thewalrus.ca/canada-ai-plan/

On the left: a photograph of Mark Carney and Evan Solomon through glass, blurred slightly. On the right: text that reads “Canada finally has a national AI strategy. Experts hate it. We asked researchers, entrepreneurs, and policy analysts to read the plan so you don’t have to. They found plenty to worry about.”

we heard you hate AI, so at LFP we've been making resources for turning off AI features across the web. but we also don't think AI problems can be solved at an individual level, so we included some of our fav tools for community resistance as well. more to download free at libraryfreedom.org

At the core of international law constraining the death penalty is that it should never be used discriminatorily. This new law could not be more discriminatory if it tried. Grounded in the racist belief that Palestinian lives matter less.

‘Discriminatory’ Israeli death penalty law would be war crime, says UN rights chief

Volker Türk says bill, which applies to Palestinians convicted of terror charges but not Jewish extremists, must be repealed

Even if you didn’t intend to hurt people, even if you didn’t have control over it, why not feel sorry that people were hurt? I think I am fundamentally confused by this allergy to empathizing enough to want to apologize and say I’m sorry you were hurt

Something I hope happens more in the discourse about AI-enabled harms and violence is disrupting the notion that we need AI at all, or that using AI is inevitable. Part of the problem is the overbroad use of the term that has rendered it meaningless/mystified.

So many harms have already emerged from reckless and oppressive uses of AI, with such wide-ranging & far-reaching consequences, to so many groups of people, that it seems almost impossible to document them all. But we tried, in this open letter to Minister Solomon: bccla.org/policy-submi... (1/x)

The "second-generation cut off" has been described as a genocide “in paper form;" as "an evil that threatens our very existence;" as an act of "retaliation;" as discrimination, and, as assimilation. Yet it remains a part of Canadian law. Why? My latest ⬇️ www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews...

Indian Act's ‘second-generation cut-off’ poses an existential threat to treaty people in Canada

Thanks to the Indian Act’s ‘second-generation cut-off,’ First Nations people face a baffling and offensive equation when it comes to their status rights.

Buried in Columbia's agreement/bribe with the Trump regime (and not reported by the news) is a section which agrees to segregate trans women from women's housing, sports, and bathrooms. Functionally, trans women are no longer welcome at Columbia University.

Excerpt from Columbia's agreement/bribe to the Trump Regime:
20. Columbia will uphold its commitment to Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 by providing safe and fair opportunities for women including single-sex housing for women who request such housing and all-female sports, locker rooms, and showering facilities.
