These idiots reify the individual, against every coherent philosophical & empirically robust critique. If it's not reactionary, eugenic, & meritocratic individualist ideology, they must project witchcraft b/c otherwise they're at root no better than poor dark queer single immigrant women w/ children

The idea we need to get rid of entire fields of scholarship is just bizarre, reactionary stuff. It is John Roberts refusing to accept "sociological gobbledygook" to allow gerrymandering to continue, it is Pamela Paul calling to get rid of Soc on the WSJ opinion page.

Erstwhile humanities scholar (I personally love the humanities) and current anti-higher ed propagandist for the right Tyler Austin Harper has now decided his position is that “entire fields of the social sciences” are “functionally fake” and “basically witchcraft with Data.”

TAH:

My view is that the focus on individual frauds is frustrating when there are entire fields of the social sciences that are functionally fake, don’t replicate, have no realistic prospect of shaping up, and yet continue to hoover up resources undeterred like zombie enterprises.

So yes I find it annoying that there are more than a few people in academia who are willing to overlook individual misconduct for a variety of uncompelling reasons, but that pales in comparison to the fact that entire fields are basically witchcraft with Data and no one cares.

“no one cares”, says the guy who cares so desperately he’s doing all he can to destroy said (imagine) “fields” “no one cares”, which is apparently why the entire propaganda machine of the right has been loudly mobilized against said fields for decades

Nothing monstrous or cynical about it. Listen, I feel no need to praise S&S. I’d still call this a welcome show of publisher support—a refusal to cave to racists who undermined him and his work and his life at every turn. At the very least, let his book have its day.

I’m sorry, Arday himself can’t benefit from this but his family can. Why shouldn’t they if people want to buy it? It’s so telling that *this* is what is considered “monstrous.”

Thomas Chatterton Williams:

Yikes, the Arday book is on its way to becoming a bestseller now, and it feels pretty cynical that the publisher hasn’t pulled it

Tyler Austin Harper quoting him:

Monstrous
