I make music and help others make the music they want to make. Composer, co-AD of New Amsterdam Records. Western MA based. He/him. Pic drawn by my now-11yo. None of us are free until all of us are free.
The most terrifying enshittification I've discovered has been learning that Microsoft Word documents no longer auto-save if you are not saving them to one of their own proprietary cloud services. I'm slapping control-S like it's 1999.
Reading a lot of very sound political analysis about why El-Sayed is winning and I'm sure it's all correct but it's also worth noting that he's a much, much more charismatic and relatable candidate than Stevens
the graft, it is endless
In addition to having no experience in immigration, their website shows Ilya Shapiro (!) and disgraced former law prof Joshua Wright (!) as Senior Counsel. I don't think this massive contract was awarded to give immigrant children effective, zealous advocacy. burkegroup.law/our-team/
AI art boosters, even the socially positive one, seem to only be able to think of limitations — say, to one artistic medium — as negative. But artistic limitations are an integral part of art and art-making — not just in the process of creation but in our perception of how a given work functions.
three of my favorites are Head Hunters / Thrust / Man-Child (Herbie Hancock & Headhunters) Donald Byrd's Street Lady / Stepping Into Tomorrow / Places and Spaces run (as long as Chuck Rainey and Harvey Mason are there with Byrd, that's a continuous band) Pixies' Surfer Rosa / Doolittle / Bossanova
What's the best three album run from a band? (the correct answer is Moving Pictures, Signals, and Grace Under Pressure by Rush, but I'm excited to learn second place)
Sitting outside watching various pollinators ignore the showy hydrangeas that our predecessors here planted and going nuts for the goldenrod, chive, and thyme flowers One hummingbird tried the hydrangea flower and then decidedly did not try another one
On the night of 2–3 August 1944, nearly 3,000 Roma men, women and children were murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Today, on European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day, we honour the victims of the Roma genocide and reaffirm our duty to preserve their memory.
The fact that we can even have this level of conversation around transphobia within the WNBA just casts the deeper problems of the MNBA - itself much more progressive than other male sports leagues - into stark relief
taylor farms is a HUGE conglomerate and because they have a contract with sysco, which supplies restaurants, hospitals, and corporate cafeterias as well as a number of large supermarket chains, this very pointedly means that a ginormous chunk of what we eat is powered by incarcerated labor
I love Talarico and hope he wins. But he’s already raised $70M On the flipside, control of critical state legislatures will come down to seats where candidates raise 0.1% of that. I’ve researched the highest leverage swing district candidates you should donate to secure.actblue.com/donate/donat...
Donate to the candidates on the front lines of the fight against MAGA gerrymandering
These are anti-MAGA state candidates in *extremely* close races

Even if they were, Brand Democrat is not going to be able do create the space that’s needed on the right, right now.
And no, before we do this again, the Democrats are not already a center-right/conservative party
All the Pundits spending all of their time on What Democrats Must Do should be spending all of their time asking the Lisa Murkowskis & Mitt Romneys why they aren’t following Bill Kristol’s lead & why they continue to ally with/enable the far right authoritarians & have done so since 2016.
👇🎯💯 Again, as I have been yelling at the clouds for years, there are <only two solutions> here, & no one wants to talk about either one. Which is why I, & perhaps you also, remain so deeply concerned about the tenuous future of 🇺🇸 democracy.
I have been waiting all summer for Erik to bring us his annual TOMATO SANDWICHES thread. This is nothing short of pure joy. Read and delight in it.
(In honor of August, bringing this 🧵 over from twitter) August makes me think of the best summer restaurant I ever ate at. It didn’t have a name, just a tidy hand-painted sign: “Tomato Sandwiches—all you can eat.” #tomatosandwiches
<hides behind wall> I didn't know this was a hot take
Post your hottest music take. Mine is New Order is better than Joy Division.
Arco is a really beautiful family movie but if you have younger kids, be warned that just when you think you've gotten through the toughest bits, the movie hits you with some knockout blows right toward the end This isn't even a spoiler because it's not quite about plot, it's about "scary for kids"
and there are good summaries of other studies and what fair policy might look like here
Trans Women in Sport: What Does the Science Say?
Research suggests trans women have minimal to no performance advantage over cisgender women.
transresearch.org.au
here, i’m citing my sources. the largest meta-analytic study came out this year
Groundbreaking study finds no evidence that trans athletes are ‘a threat’ to women’s sports
Trans and cis women show similar levels of physical fitness in competition, according to the first meta‑analysis of the published research
english.elpais.com
want to address this one because it’s a common misconception. this whole thing is entirely astroturfed transphobia, and if “good faith” people bought it they never looked into the science (there is no physical advantage for trans girls over cis girls) or the fact that this was a settled matter
dunno. there's a difference between public performative political discourse and personal views... yes, the campaigners are all bad faith, but I certainly know cis parents with gay kids who do in fact see tough issues in girls sports but give no quarter on passports, ids, jobs, bathrooms, violence...
i seem to recall intense backlash from both parties when a multiracial coalition of young people suggested policy proposals that would reduce these deaths. Maybe the question is, who is we?
Are we comfortably numb with police violence? The brutal cop killing of Corey Ruiz in Madison, Wisc. sparked local protest but only muted outrage on the national level. Despite falling crime, cops gun down more Americans than ever Where's the outrage? My new column www.inquirer.com/opinion/core...
It genuinely feels like our collective absorption of market ideology is so profoundly thorough that many people can’t comprehend why a Professor of Classical Studies would privilege the content and meaning of the ancient texts she loves over contemporary starfuckery or selling more books
Let’s not forget that a lot of those workers (the pigs, at minimum) are also cannibals in the Scarry universe, which could be seen as an efficiency
Richard Scarry was way ahead of his time on stagnant labor productivity in homebuilding
This is so true and so sick. And it’s because most white New Yorkers have no direct contact with Rikers, and many of them support the overall approach to law enforcement of which Rikers is a part. But even the ones who don’t are not usually implicated by that system (for example, me).
This is also why I’ll never get over a whole generation of politicians rushing to say how much they empathized with Kalief Browder only to turn around and reinforce the same systems that lead to his death.
