The reason that the Harry Potter apologists won't just read better books is because they're not looking for good stories...if they were, they wouldn't have glommed on to Harry Potter. They're looking for the camaraderie and social phenomenon that Harry Potter was in the 2000s.

when someone is revealed to have done racist things or behaved in a racist way, actively, responding “that person is not A Racist” isn’t appropriate. racism is something you do. if you think of people as “a racist” or “not a racist”, you don’t actually know what you’re talking about. it’s a tell.
