Britain’s long-term economic growth and strategic heft depend on winning top-tier scientists, engineers, and technical founders. Following the government's announcement of a new head-hunting unit for exceptional talent, I wrote for @britishprogress.bsky.social on what it should look like:

This is an intriguing addition to the centre-left think tank space, with an impressively dynamic leadership - I will be interested to see the ideas they produce!

I am incredibly proud to be founding @britishprogress.bsky.social with @davidlawrenceuk.bsky.social. For the past year, we've been publishing ideas on economic growth and British progress with @ukdayone.bsky.social. This will be a continuation and expansion of that work.

I had the pleasure of attending a @starshiprobots.bsky.social event recently and seeing their extremely cute robots in action. I'd certainly love them to deliver to me up in Newcastle!
This week I learnt cute delivery robots are illegal in the UK because a law ***from 1835*** still governs how things move on British pavements. 🧵

The UK's aversion to risk-taking and its tendency to penalise failure are often chalked up to culture. But this is a systemic problem – our system actively works against innovation. One place you can see this? Bankruptcy law. New @ukdayone.bsky.social briefing by Johannes Matt
Climate change costs lives but cheaper energy saves lives. Both are inconvenient truths if you want a neat, ideologically coherent worldview, so most people ignore one. I would love to see an impartial analysis of the overall lives saved from different energy sources.
This is the kind of industrial strategy even I can get on board with 💪

We have struggled with industrial strategies in the past. But many countries (Germany, Taiwan, France, US, China) have implemented strategies that spurred growth, secured leadership in emerging sectors, and strengthened natsec. Here’s what we think the UK needs to do industrial strategy well:

A question from @davidlawrenceuk.bsky.social I am also going to put to my followers: what are the best books on *UK* immigration?
