A local Italian restaurant from my childhood. We were regulars to the point where I had my high school graduation dinner there, and they set up a special table in the elevated section. And *on purpose* made my favorite dessert - an chocolate cookie-crusted chocolate mousse pie.

I don't want to hear about your lost loves, tell me about the restaurant food that haunts you because you'll never be able to taste it again

Freight line next to work and the same line (I think) not far from my home/a field away from the local playground. Entertains the Kiddo, who LOVES trains, and is only occasionally Very Loud. Then again, I live within spitting distance of NYC. Trains are lifeblood, here.

I am quite certain there are people on this very website who are like "I WOULD RATHER LIVE NEXT TO A HIGHLY ACTIVE FREIGHT TRAIN LINE THAN HAVE A DATACENTER WITHIN 10 MILES OF ME" and that thought makes me lol quite a bit

I do not understand people who call themselves sci-fi fans, who have somehow NOT absorbed the lessons from sci-fi. Yes, Star Trek has a form of AI. A form of AI VERY CAREFULLY CONTROLLED, until it's Data. And there's a LOT of controversy about Data! DATA is conflicted about DATA!

John Scalzi@scalzi.com · 3w ago

Every now and then someone takes a run at me along the lines of "I don't understand why you, a scifi writer, don't appreciate 'AI'," and I'm all, motherfucker, it's *because* I'm a science fiction writer I have the positions I have, how many times do we have to fucking yell "torment nexus," my dude

Americans absolutely cannot handle minor personal inconvenience, unless it has been sold to us as “freedom.” The correct response to necessary lockdowns was “our very rich government should pay us all to stay home” but instead a bunch of people went with “I must dine out and it’s tyranny if I can’t”

Peter@notalawyer.bsky.social · 3w ago

it’s pretty obvious that a lot of people remember that COVID lockdowns were unpleasant and from there just extrapolate that they were therefore bad policy

I’m sharing this video again because people don’t really get what these data centers and ai are doing to our planet and our communities. Especially Black communities because they were strategically placed there. I need you to listen to these people. STOP USING AI. STOP SUPPORTING AI.

The world has entered “an era of global water bankruptcy” with irreversible consequences, according to a new United Nations report. https://cnn.it/4qxGTNX

When people who repeatedly make very basic unforced errors in their ostensibly carefully researched science communication reveal that they use genAI it is less of a revelation and more of a confirmation.

Ok so this lady says solar panels are getting built on "the most productive farmland" in her area. Which just ain't true at all. It ain't true here in NC either. Where I ALSO hear that talking point over & over again. Smells like astroturf! So let's get the dirt on solar farms & dirt ✨

I genuinely don't know what to do about this. In our diseased information environment, one MAGA-adjacent "influencer" can do more to shape public opinion than mountains of studies or facts. Where are the pro-clean-energy influencers to counter this shit?

Boy, HOWDY, is New York SALTY AF that LeBron chose Philly. Literally have friends throwing snit fits at me because I'm excited. (I have said nothing anti-New York. I have pointed out I hated the Sixers getting swept by them, and that Philly never gets picked for anything.)

Was handed a project. Realized I needed data from an older woman at work. Requested data. Was denied on the grounds that I didn't need said data. Could not move forward with the project. Was asked about it. Explained I needed the data. Cue meeting. Older woman flipped out on me in meeting.

what are some absurd work situations you can share? once i got called into a meeting i had nothing to do with because the consultant brought an engineer and no one in the room could understand him, so they asked me to translate. he was scouse. i translated from english to english.

As a working mom who ALSO works in a museum, THIS. I love my child more than my own life. I also really love my job. EXTRA FUCKING BONUS PERK: my job is a place where my kid can learn and have fun. AND, I get the, "MAMA!" *child thuds into me* emotional high at work.

Abbie 🌟@abbiestev.bsky.social · last mo.

Plus, since I work at a museum, my kid gets to visit "mama's dinos" in "mama's castle" whenever he wants and pet the dodo bird replica in the office that we dress up seasonally, so, there are perks 😊

Humans: "I would like to go get food, get to work or school, and have a little fun now and then." The society humans built: "Sure thing. That will cost you $12,000 a year and you can only do it if you're above a certain age and physically capable of operating heavy machinery."

honestly something so hopeful about knowing that even if McConnell and Graham are replaced by Republicans, they will be replaced by FRESHMAN Republicans. this is still a pair of massive fractures in the wall of GOP senate power. and what a nice reminder that all the worst people eventually die

Look, I'LL TAKE IT. He warned the GOP that they would deserve what they got if they elected *45. Hope he's enjoying that prediction. Genuine question: does this put SC into play? At all? I mean, goodness knows Dems have been WAY overperforming since January of last year.

Why we keep calling out the misogyny on the liberal and left, right here. If you think it's a contradiction, you're missing the abuse. If you think it's hypocrisy, you're missing the abuse. Believe women. When the racist white women won't marry them, it's a BAD sign for any immigrant bride.

Talia "ATTACK DOGS is out now!" Bhatt ⚢@taliabhatt.itch.io · last mo.

I desperately need people to understand why pointing out that some racist male influencer has a non-white wife is neither "hypocrisy" nor even a "contradiction" in their worldview.
