Yeah & I don't think it was even necessarily "knowing more than Hank Green." Those scripts are written by teams & staff writers! And like… every SciShow video about agriculture has stuff in it where I go "Haha actually it's a little bit different than that!" That's what knowing a field is like!

Omg, I saw that happening and, despite having a literal pile of yarn and crochet hooks covering my coffee I table, I could not figure out why it was worth anything more than briefly feeling smug that I knew more about something than Hank Green

Right so I see this as a human perception problem, not a fungal existence problem. (And listen, I get why "can defy human perception" can be seen as "eldritch," I just... don't agree? There's a LOT we don't understand?) To fix this, we gotta stop fearing them & get on their level

I did my doctorate on fungi and yeah they are spooky mysterious eldritch creatures. There's an entire genus of them called "shit, I don't know what that is, here's a placeholder". Despite first being identified in 1800s, Stachybotrys chartarum has been reclassified 11 different times.

this is literally what I do for a living and it's called "blameless root cause" where you identify everything that went wrong without assigning blame to any one person in particular. the NTSB really went all in on this and it's one of the reasons airplane travel is/(was?) so safe in the US.

I would like to propose the Taco Bell Principle When a person/institution Did A Problem, & IMMEDIATELY fesses up & takes proactive steps to solve it That's exactly what we want them to do? So how bout we let them live ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The craziest fallout of the Cyclospora situation for me personally is I used to work in a microbiology lab as the one (1) parasitologist. That lab didn't even have the right gear for many of the tests they wanted me to do. Couldn't train me to run the tests right, bc nobody in the lab knew how!

Absolutely unbelievable how solar power has taken off worldwide during the Hormuz oil crisis. You don't have to hand it to him, but Trump may have done more to finally kick off a global civilization of effete librul solar users than anyone else in the West

Chart showing solar panel exports from China (the main solar panel maker by a long shot) growing steadily & mightily from 2018 through 2026, then spiking by almost 2x in March 2026.

Yep. There IS no such thing as "an ideology that's So Pure, it automatically repels rapists, so we can just relax & stop vetting." "But what about [centrist sex pest]??" Thats not a fucking gotcha, dude. They should get kicked out of politics too. And that's exactly what's been happening to them.

... So I think the point, to go back to the OP, is that this has to be fought out, again and again. At least in the corner of bsky I hang out in, opposition to Platner was fierce as of last Fall, and a lot of people did the work to figure out what was going wrong.

We have hit the point of Bluesky virality where the QTs on the "Hey did you know "rural" is not a synonym for "white" thread are angry that it isn't a historiographical deep dive on the processes of settler state formation
