Excited to share what I've been working on with an incredible team! Visualisation of Asgard viruses on cell surfaces and vesicles, and a story of complex viral interactions. Preprint: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... @brendanburns999.bsky.social @belindaferrari.bsky.social @xabivc.bsky.social

🧶🧬 We present LMi4Boltz: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... Boltz-2 is an excellent open source alternative to AlphaFold3. However, high VRAM use restricts modeling large complexes. Using careful memory management, we increase the Boltz-2 size limit by >60% while maintaining execution speed.
This is amazing work lead by Tom (@tlitfin.bsky.social) in my team. Always trying to get more for less and making computing efficient. So satisfying making science resources go further. Boltz2 is great for protein structure prediction and hopefully LMI4Boltz extends its use. Code on GitHub… 🧶🧬
LMI4Boltz: Optimizing VRAM utilization to predict large macromolecular complexes with consumer grade hardware
AlphaFold2 has revolutionized structural biology by enabling the prediction of protein structures approaching experimental quality. AlphaFold3 extends this framework to support modelling broad biomole...

This was fun! Folding whole proteomes… looking at tomogram, looking at genomes🤩 lots to discover!🧬🧶
An Asgard archaeon from a modern analog of ancient microbial mats
It has been proposed that eukaryotic cells evolved via symbiosis between sulfate-reducing bacteria and hydrogen-producing archaea. Here we describe a highly enriched culture of a novel Asgard archaeon...

So excited to finally show the world a project years in the making. A huge group effort with lots of expertise leading to a unique #Asgard syntrophy story. Very fortunate to have been involved in cultivating and analysing this wonderful organism ❤️
Our new preprint with a new #Asgard from stromatolites (and its Desulfobacterota companion). Complete circularised genomes of both, cool #cryoem images, protein modelling, etc Big group effort with a lot of people involved #archaeasky #archaea www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Our Big Fantastic Virus Database (BFVD) is now published NAR! It contains protein structure predictions of major viral clades, enhanced by petabase-scale homology search and it's explorable on the web. 🌐 bfvd.foldseek.com 💾 bfvd.steineggerlab.workers.dev 📄 academic.oup.com/nar/advance-...
Go @hannjbrown.bsky.social and @iduggin.bsky.social !! Archaea champs 💪🏽
🚨 New paper alert! 🚨 MinD is famously known for positioning FtsZ at mid-cell in bacteria In our study, myself and @iduggin.bsky.social found that MinD homologues in Haloferax volcanii influence the localisation of CetZ1, a homologue of FtsZ and tubulin #Archaeasky #Microsky
Sharing new tools made by Artyom Egorov in my group! 1) loVis4u sensitively compares & visualises #phage or #plasmid seqs with beautiful vector graphics www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... 2) iLund4u finds diversity hotspots/islands encoding eg virulence/ defence systems www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Now out in NSMB for those who missed our biorxiv back in 2023.. bacterial ESCRT-III-like #Vipp1 forms dynamic spiral filaments on membrane! Spirals are springs that drive 3D ring formation in the spiral centre! 😵💫 wonderful collaboration with Adai Colom’s lab and @rouxlab.bsky.social rdcu.be/dZSPQ

Finally started migrating from X to bsky and hoping to connect with more people interested in #Bioinformatics 🧬💻. Thanks @amanzanom.bsky.social for all the tips so far and if someone out there have any good tips, please let me know!
A nice paper on microbial dark matter revealing that in situ devices increase coral's microbes culturability up to 570% is out on iScience 🧪. This device, initially used in soils, has proved to be useful in marine sponges and, now, in corals as well. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... #SymbioSky
Hello Blueskis. Here is a starter pack of General Microbiology. It's a small list currently. Please feel free to self-nominate and I will add you. go.bsky.app/QgSQHJ9
I made a quick Starter Pack for scientists working on virus discovery - please reply if you’d like me to add you to the pack (or remove you) or to recommend anyone! #scisky go.bsky.app/HK1wxRb
I made a starter pack for researchers who study various aspects of viral sociality. It's woefully incomplete and has lots of room to grow, so do message me if I've missed you! go.bsky.app/3PfgjkP #SocialViruses 🦠 🧪
