3/ Now, we eradicated it in 1966, but how did we do that? Starting in the late 1950s, scientists used the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT): mass-producing sterile males and releasing them to outcompete wild males, collapsing the fly population. It works because female flies mate only once.

Welp, so book of the day is Nella Larsen’s Passing so I can talk to my mom about it. It’s about two very light-skinned Black women, one of whom has chosen to fully pass as white—married a white man who doesn’t know etc—and the other of whom lives as Black except for occasionally in restaurants etc.

My mom just read Nella Larsen’s Passing, and felt like author judged Clare for her selfish choice. It’s been a couple decades since I read it, but IIRC the book appears to have a lot of sympathy and pity for Clare, but not judgement per se. Feel like it wanted us to see how trapped they both are.

I saw a group of condors a few years ago, riding a mountain wave just for the joy of it. It was magnificent, like seeing an eclipse, a phenomenon beyond human scale. All I could think was, "I have seen the dragons on the wings of morning."
