I was looking to go see Coyote vs. ACME this weekend and I'm horrified at the cost of going to the movies. $70 for three people to just get butts on seats. Nevermind concessions. Plus, everything has to be booked ahead and has assigned seating, all of which really kills any sort of spontaneity.

I was on a group Zoom call where one of the participants was sharing his screen. He accidentally shared the one where Gemini is ingesting our call, summarizing it in realtime, and offering reply suggestions. I didn’t even know that was a thing! So even when talking to a human, it might be a bot.

I'm texting UPS about a lost package, asked for a human agent and not a bot, was assured I'd get an actual person, and then this popped up

"Hello, thank you for contacting

UPS. My name is Tetrax, and I'm here to assist you today.

So, my kid just started college in a CUNY school today. Last week he went to get the ID card and the ID system was down. Today he was told it would work again some time in September. WTF? The school requires ID to enter the buildings so in the mean every new student needs to sign in instead.

“If you want research led teaching then at a minimum you have to allow teaching staff time to *read* and incorporate new research” I say every year as I object, again, to a workload model that allows 50mins prep per 1 hour teaching.

I remember being asked about “research-led teaching” in an interview for a full-time teaching-only job, and I really had to stop myself from saying “but you won’t be paying me to do any research!”

It's been 5 days since this fiasco started. Marley Spoon has taken thousands and thousands of people's money, not fulfilled their end of the contract, and cut off all customer service. Some people are receiving boxes with nothing but the ice packs. At this point this is willful fraud and theft.

Of course I cancelled (I also had issues last week). The default action of their AI is to give minimal credits for future orders, which is insufficient. I can't make a single meal from the ingredients they sent. What do you mean you're giving me only $36 credit when I paid over $120 for this box?

I can't solve a societal impulse to treat college as a credentialing stamp instead of an education. I can just choose to put my energy into students who want the education instead.

Question for the academic hive mind. As I’ve talked about ad nauseam, I recently earned an Associate in Applied Science in Culinary Arts and a certificate in bread baking. Is that something that I should put in my CV? I’m a food historian, which matters, I suppose. My field is US/Colonial America.

Marley Spoon, the meal kit company, royally screwed up this week's orders for customers all over the country. It's so bad that some people got only a huge box, cooling packs and all, with only panko in it. Most of the items for my three meals were missing. One meal "kit" had only chicken broth.

Last semester I transitioned all my discussion assignments for the second half of the US survey from Canvas to Kritik and now I'm doing the same with the first half of the survey. I had forgotten how much mental energy that process takes.

I’m feeling quite smug about this lunch I just made, if I’m being honest 😂 My own bread, and with the exception of the salt and olive oil, it’s all local ingredients from farms I can name, thanks to the farmers market and the CSA. Nice little peach caprese.

One more Trump supporter — Lindsay Graham — lost in the Senate. In their obituary for him @theguardian.com quotes Graham’s famous quote (on Twitter from 2016): “If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed … and we will deserve it.”

Lindsey Graham, key ally of Donald Trump, has died after sudden illness, his office says

Republican senator had served in the Senate since 2003 and was a sharp critic of Trump before becoming one of his most loyal backers

Today I mixed, fermented, and shaped 35kg/77lbs of sourdough, which is 36 loaves of bread, plus some brioche dough, by myself in my NYC apartment kitchen, using my own two hands and a small spiral mixer that can only do 5kg at a time. Things were learned.
