Immigrant Canadian here. Lived in Alberta and Nova Scotia. Visited BC, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, PEI, Newfoundland. Driven through Saskatchewan and New Brunswick. No territories, though.

It’s a fascinating thing to think about when you compare to other countries: we are hundreds — thousands! — of kilometers away from our fellow citizens

Referring to it as “talk of making Canada the 51st state” instead of “annexation threats” downplays the action in question and adopts the rhetoric of the threat-maker, and no Canadian individual or media outlet should be using those words. I will die on this hill.
I’m grateful to be a Canadian. I’m glad to be a Canadian. I feel fortunate to be a Canadian, especially since I could have easily not been. ‘Proud’ has never seemed like the right word, though, especially since most of the reasons I’m Canadian are about privilege and luck. I hope that’s okay.

Tuesday will be the first anniversary of my official retirement! It still feels more like a permanent academic sabbatical than anything non-academics would consider retirement, but I’m starting to be more able to conceive of that someday, at least.

Absolutely none of the American tourists interviewed at the end of this podcast said that they thought Canada was in the right. Mostly they hedged and refused to take a side. I’m actually surprised, given how often we see Americans online saying “we love Canada, this is just our president”, etc. /1

The makeovers that led to it being as awesome as it is are pretty recent, so I’m constantly surprised by the fact that many locals don’t seem to be aware of that (and many of those who are think it’s just a playground for tourists that has nothing to offer locals).
august 🍂@auguststreet.ca · 2w agohalifax's waterfront is pretty impressive. it's continuous, well-lit, integrated with downtown, has some art, ample individual and group seating, and retail directly on the space. the level of activity at 9pm is testament to the success of its design. people love to hang out here
I was afraid Canada wouldn’t actually (be able to) do this—universities have been so underfunded in recent years. But it’s going to be good for these academics AND for the country. (Though let’s still fix the underfunding too, okay?)
