Just doing my part to knock down autocrats (and aspiring autocrats) wherever I can

Ukraine intercepted only one ballistic missile last night because the country has run out of missiles for its Patriot systems. In Kyiv, nine people were killed and 30 injured. Every delayed decision eventually arrives in Ukraine in the form of death and destruction.

Yet another flood of videos from Russians weeping over the "shock" and "unfairness" of strikes on a Wildberries warehouse. It doesn't cross their minds how unfair it felt when we were just living our lives, bothering no one, in our own country and our own homes,

Shocking moment of today's Russian strike on Sumy, which killed 5 people‼️ Please do not look away! No mother should be forced to cover her children's bodies with her own like this. No child should have to live through such horrors!

One of the only tactics that works to build public support for democracy during a period of backsliding is to directly link the regime's corruption to citizens' quality of life Schiff wildly misses the mark by placing the blame externally rather than internally, doing Trump's work for him

Canada's boycott of California wine is causing devastating harm to winegrowers. I'm urging the Canadian government to recognize that California doesn’t agree with these tariff wars, to lift these restrictions, and increase consumer options to strengthen both our economies.

Venezuela quake: The most useful thing to give after a major catastrophe is cash. But it can be tricky figuring out where to send the cash where it’ll have the biggest impact. Local charities with known track records & connections work best, but… they’re the ones also struggling in the aftermath.

If you’re a manager, teacher, or other leader, consider if you have Venezuelan employees, students, or volunteers. A USGS red pager event means we’re anticipating thousands of deaths. Silence is going to be echoing terrifying for people far away from their loved ones. Just… Be gentle.

Do folks remember the 2014 Sochi Olympics and the near-constant construction fails due to massive graft and no-bid contracts to Putin associates? The Sochi Games let the Russian opposition clearly link corruption/state capture to national humiliation, a lesson I'm begging Democrats to learn.

Here at the Reflecting Pool where a big chunk ofTrump's blue paint-apoxie has peeled off the bottom of the pool and is bobbling in the water.

I can't get over how much Vira in particular looks like she could be just one of my teen's stage crew friends, hanging out around the fire pit after wrapping a show. Vira and Lyubava had their whole lives ahead of them, and died for Russia's imperial goals. My heart breaks for their mother.

This is Lyubava and Vira. They were sisters, just 12 and 17 years old. On May 14, a russian missile strike killed them. They died together in the wreckage, leaving behind their mother, who is now fighting for her life in the hospital.

🧵with a little bit of comparative politics and a little bit of how you can take action to safeguard our little-d democratic institutions. We know how autocrats behave, and protecting the watchdogs is one of the most important things we can do right now.

My Civic Workout @mycivicworkout.bsky.social · 3mo ago

TL;DR There is a playbook for how autocrats consolidate power. Aspiring #autocrats seek to dismantle the institutions that could hold him accountable, like #media and #watchdog organizations.

Yes yes yes. The "anti gender" movement has been the tip of the right wing populist spear for decades As a result, the lgbtq+ community has the strongest skills and tools to fight fascism That's why throwing any member of that group under the bus is not just immortal -- it's terrible tactics

Orban's inability to prevent last year's Pride protests—attended by 300k despite being banned—was a turning point in his authoritarian grip of the country. Queer people are always leading the fight against authoritarianism, as we are often its first targets. Never cower to fear.

Polls close at 7 pm CEST, which is 1 pm EST for those who don't want to do math. However, there are reportedly a lot of folks still in line and the vote count won't start until everyone in line at 7 has voted, so it will be a long (but hopefully joyous) night in Hungary.

Historic turnout in 🇭🇺 – 66% as of 3pm. We will likely have surpassed 2022's turnout (70.2%) by 5pm. I don't dare to draw any conclusions or make predictions based on turnout data alone, but let's just say: Hungarians know how consequential this election is, and they are mobilising in huge numbers.

ICYMI, this week Evan Urquhart wrote about the central place of trans and queer activists in the movement against ICE. Activists told Assigned the solidarity we see today is the result of years of coalition building rooted in the movement for Black lives. www.assignedmedia.org/breaking-new...
