ages ago i saw someone say to try to show a full body character every page/spread. forces shot creativity and helps downstream issues like not engaging with or fleshing out the environment enough, and if you want to break it you gotta justify why (and it makes that more impactful!)

My real tip for new comic artists is to make sure to take a step back during the layout process and look at the comic as a whole so you don't have medium or close up shots for like 5 pages straight. your characters just don't feel like they occupy a space if you do that.

first ever #ArtFight attack (EVER!) friendly fire against Nyxthatsit (tumblr/AF) / nyxthatsart (insta) who started my #ArtFight2026 off by doing a VERY cute n fun drawing of my lovely dnd pc Hana, which was an honor to receive. anyways this is Florella the fiercest fairy🧚

Her body is the color of pale lavender, and she has furry legs and tiny paws for feet. Her dress is short and green, almost jade colored. She is flying toward the viewer wielding a floral rapier sword in one hand, and a fancy dagger in her other. Don't let her pastel color and tiny size fool you; she is fierce and will kill. ~burning bridges matches~ a book art project that explored the bridges i've burned in my life and why. final piece was folded into a matchbox and contained matches within as well as cards that told stories of relationships i've lost written in flame reactive invisible ink

when i went to scad i wanted to learn to turn my art into beautiful things, but i learned instead that the chaos of my process gives my art energy that refinement and polish obliterates. I'm good with that.

The very first lecture I had at art school, told us that we weren't there to learn to make beautiful images. We were there to learn to communicate ideas. (That could sometimes be beautiful but also not.) If we wanted to make "soulless beauty" we were pointed to the door. This was 20 years ago.
