Lebanese basically inherited a functioning state & ran it into the ground. The French left roads, courts, & universities. What replaced them left militia checkpoints, a crater where the port used to be, & a currency-ponzi scheme. We extracted from that inheritance never building on it.

The good: Under the silence of mid-90s repression, it was one of the few places where people could actually assemble, scream, and express a suppressed public voice.
