fwiw speaking as a formerly failed sock knitter, if you ever decide to try again, I recommend @kateatherley.bsky.social Custom Sock book. It made socks so much more approachable and satisfying to knit. I’m in the middle of a pair right now.

I agree it may well be too difficult too tease out significant results . However, it's also a good bit of awareness raising. There's also value in getting more knitters to think about their own gauge in this much detail whatever the results may show.

Very good observations! I think it's good research and definitely should go ahead, for clarity. Just not sure about the value if there's so many variables uncontrolled for.

I saw this too and had similar thoughts. In terms of experiment design it's like a scoping study to find the best areas to investigate in the main research. In practical terms, more people are likely to take part if they can use what they have without buying anything new. Hope they get enough folk.

Not linking directly to it because I don't want this to be seen as direct criticism. Someone has launched a gauge measurement project, looking to see how much variation there really is in people's gauge. I love this idea! 1/.
