While there are real and important issues with society's uncritical use of AI, targeting authors is not a solution. Witch hunts don't hurt scammers but they really really hurt folks who wrote their books but have been accused, with wholly imperfect evidence, of cheating.
I'm just gonna say: it somewhat baffles me that people who are understandably skeptical of opaque LLMs as legitimate sources of information will suddenly go full on "the computer KNOWS" when they are using opaque tools to "detect" AI. The computer does not know.
Every person at Microcosm is freaking awesome
Of all the newsletters I thought people would respond to enthusiastically, the one where I ramble on about my excitement for the new Women's Pro Baseball League and community wasn't even close to the top of the list

I just texted my husband that contingency planning is my ultimate form of self-care, and reader, I wish I'd put my finger on this ages ago. Like, contingency planning is a part of my job I know I'm good at. But it is also a personal-life thing I do in the face of any crisis, big or small.
I'm searching "Canadian Tire Heated Rivalry" because ?? and you guys, there is a whole viral thing happening because Hudson Williams was photographed carrying a Canadian Tire reusable shopping bag and they are now selling out across the country and fans are shipping them to folks outside of Canada.
Careful outside today. Smoke from all the fires is moving in and will stick around for several days.
Absolutely not kidding about this. Know of a Canadian basket weaver who's a great teacher and has a great sense of humour?
Looking for a fab Canadian basket weaver to author a zine tutorial intro to basket weaving. Is it you or do you know someone? (You've seen the movie trailer and know exactly where I'm coming from. And I am fully serious.)
My teen has been waiting for the @mlb.com trade deadline for weeks. He was up and emptying the dishwasher at 7:30 on a holiday Monday and has made it very clear that there is nothing but this for him today, don't even ask 😂
The best thing ever is getting a "delivered" notice from the freight company on the Friday night of a long weekend, a few hours after a pallet of books left the Manitoba printer for your home office in Vancouver, and the notice says it was delivered to New Brunswick.
If you want a big spectacular book-adaptation American movie about a reluctant clever hero on an impossible journey through weird places (which I do), Project Hail Mary is great.
Can confirm my neighbourhood is like this all the time.
two days after Vancouver city council voted down their own Villages Plan, west side residents who opposed the plan en masse are complaining that Dunbar (!!) doesn’t have any wine bars, boutiques or gyms — the kind of amenities that require neighbourhood density to support
The baseball parent chat has descended into Zoolander jokes. Must be the end of the regular season 😂
I am waiting for an important email. I do not know when it will come, only that it will come. The number of times in the last two weeks when I have seen I have new email and that email is spam is so high as to be UNCOUNTABLE and every. single. time. I want to burn the world down.

bought candy at the pool for a 13yo and she tried to give me cash. i was like nahh it's nbd, and she goes "girl i have seen your car." 13yo girls remain undefeated. you think you're talking to a child but you're actually talking to whatever gods used to send to punish mortals for their hubris
Honestly, I don't know what I love more about this morning: finally launching those ridiculous stickers I've been working on for months, or chatting with a colleague about loving working with people who are not assholes (such a low bar!) and obviously including each other in that group.
Y'all I cannot tell you how happy this effort has made me. From weird idea one day to working with delightful Canadian illustrator @sarahnevillestudio.bsky.social to finally launching today - nothing but joy!

An excellent thread on special editions, but holy wow, this line: "Sales are what romance gets *instead* of importance." YEP
The exception is: romance. Romance sales numbers are not permitted to measure importance. When multiauthor romance box sets started to dominate the NYT bestseller list in the early ebook era, they *changed the rules of the list* to exclude them. Sales are what romance gets *instead* of importance.
In a world where the Folio Society will sell you a $100 edition of Batman comics — a genre which also used to be coded as ephemeral trash for young readers with no taste — it is *absurd* that the only place to find a fancy edition of romance classic Lord of Scoundrels is on Kickstarter:

There’s a general understanding that money and prestige are orthogonal in publishing. Literary fiction and poetry never sell, formulaic romances make bank, people who chase the market are sellouts, bestsellers pander to the lowest common denominator instead of being Authentic Art, etc.
I have a very particular neurosis that I do not finish the best-written books. I have never not put down writing that gives me chills. I have never finished a book by @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social. I stopped reading @emilyrcwilson.bsky.social's THE ODYSSEY bc the preface blew my mind.
I will read this when I'm fully caffeinated, but I have begged us to celebrate typos for years and also I have doubled down on the em dash and overall I'm very concerned we are becoming obsessed with AI detection instead of living our good lives.
Authors and journalists are doing more first-person (hello 2010s blogging) and embracing "mistakes" in writing to prove they're not chatbots. There's even an “anti-Grammarly" app that leaves in typos and signs off "sent from my iPhone" to create more authenticity: www.wired.com/story/more-t...
We’re receiving news of an unfortunate new wave of scam emails targeting authors. If you think you’ve received an email from us, check that it came from an address ending in @writersfest.bc.ca
We are aware of an ongoing email fraud targeting authors. The scam is disguised as an invitation to appear as a featured author at our Festival. Participation in our Festival and other programming is by invite only, and we will never charge a fee for authors to apply or appear on-stage.
