Airglow is the waves of purple and green you see in much of the image. It's a combination of several process. During the day, atoms are ionized by the sun's rays. At night, as the atmosphere cools, these ions recombine, releasing energy as light. There is also luminescence caused by cosmic rays striking atoms in the atmosphere, a process similar to auroras. There is also a process known as chemiluminescence, caused by nitrogen and oxygen reacting with certain molecules high in our atmosphere.

A gravel road enters the scene on the bottom left half of the image and curves slightly to the right. There is not much detail, but green vegetation can be seen on the shoulder and wildflowers can be seen faintly. Tall pine trees line the road.

Above, the galactic arm enters the scene in the upper right and curves down and to the left, entering the scene at the midpoint on the left side. The Andromeda galaxy appears as a bright, white smudge near the center of the photo above the disappearing point of the road. The sky is filled with airglow.
