My Statement on Trump’s Executive Order on Mail-In Voting
Chatbots shouldn’t claim to be a doctor, lawyer or any other licensed professional. My bill, S7263, stops chatbots from impersonating licensed professions while allowing those bots to still give advice. Here’s a thread on what the bill does/doesn’t do & why it’s important:🧵(1/6)
A New York bill would ban AI from answering questions related to several licensed professions like medicine, law, dentistry, nursing, psychology, social work, engineering, and more. The companies would be liable if the chatbots give “substantive responses” in these areas.
The Internet & Technology Committee convened today to pass a package of bills, including legislation to protect minors from unsafe features in chatbots and to prevent AI from impersonating certain licensed professionals, including mental healthcare workers.
The Trump administration inherited a better-functioning IRS with better customer service and faster refunds. In one year, it has been dramatically hollowed out. @asteephen.bsky.social warns taxpayers may face longer delays and more mistakes that will cost working families the most.
Tax filing season is here — and the Trump administration has left the IRS in chaos. I joined @scrippsnews.bsky.social to break down what that actually means for taxpayers trying to navigate the mess.

LOADinG V2 (S7599C) has been signed into law! Earlier this year we celebrated first in the nation labor protections for public sector workers concerned w/ displacement by AI. Now, that includes educators, & guardrails on the use of AI in employment decision making in state agencies & local gov’ts.
Today the @council.nyc.gov passed COPA to add another preservation tool to our toolbox! By giving qualified purchasers a first chance to bid on distressed properties in city enforcement programs, COPA will help level the playing field & stop the cycle of speculation & rising rents.
The world's wealthy liberal democracies looked the other way on FIFA's corruption for years because they didn't think corruption in sports was a big deal or worth addressing, and now find themselves looking at FIFA as a powerful, increasingly-integrated part of the far-right anti-democracy movement.
Alan Dershowitz spent the summer feuding with a Martha’s Vineyard farmers market vendor over pierogis. I don’t think this is “where the vast majority of Americans actually are.”
Bari Weiss says she wants to use her new perch at CBS News to “redraw the lines of what falls in the 40 yards of acceptable debate” in American political and cultural life. She says the aim is to sideline voices like Hasan Piker, Tucker Carlson and Nick Fuentes, and elevate “charismatic”...
Trump’s EO to stop states from regulating AI is a direct threat to our safety and to workers, and could put the necessary guardrails we have already started building at risk. NY is stepping up to protect everyday people by passing common sense legislation & it should be signed. story: @politico.com
More inflationary policies from the Trump admin.
It’s unclear if the checks have the required support from Congress.
NOW IN EFFECT ✅ Local Law 105, sponsored by Council Member Carlina Rivera Requires DOC to notify the Chief Medical Examiner, the deceased's defense attorney, BOC, and the public after an individual dies in custody. This law also creates a Jail Death Review Board to examine systemic issues.

Hi what
It took a huge amount of vision to see the potential of what this park could deliver in the aftermath of Sandy, and to see it realized is so rewarding. Huge credit to the local leaders, NYCHA TAs, and community organizers who made this a reality when no one believed it could be done.

This is about restricting artistic expression and blocking Americans from accessing diverse cultural and political information. Once the crackdown on free speech here takes hold, he can’t have free speech from other countries coming in.

Elections are the practice of democracy. In the face of fascism, strong and healthy elections are the best tool we have to enact the will of the people. If you can’t respect election results, you are fundamentally incapable of protecting freedom and fighting for our democracy.
These outfits are why you need gays in your coalition.

This is disturbing from Ezra Klein. Not just because Kirk’s hateful and violent rhetoric is bad on it’s own, but it calls into question what Klein thinks politics is for. Is it for fighting on the internet, or making laws that govern a free and safe society? Kirk did the former, not the latter.

I’m sorry, I’m not a military expert so I may be wrong on this. Do we send U.S. troops to other countries to stop crime there? I thought it was a different reason, but again, I could be wrong.

Energy bills are rising nationwide, and Trump and the GOP are to blame. They rolled back clean energy incentives and greenlit an AI surge, pushing costs onto working families and deepening economic & environmental inequality. I break it down in TIME today: time.com/7312151/ener...
Energy Costs are Rising. Trump and Big Tech Are to Blame
On the campaign trail, President Donald Trump promised to cut energy costs in half. Now, energy costs are skyrocketing.

The main job of elected officials is legislators who need to use technical and precise language, a context in which these phrases are appropriate, even necessary. This advice may be ok for a PR flack, but it’s not serious. These people are out of their depth, we can’t let them weigh us down.

Fantastic article by Michael Kimmelman. His understanding of the political stakes and social impact of these projects is unparralleled, and his perspective is so needed as we face challenges that need urgent public attention. Of course, I am biased, but it's also nice to read people like the park.
