@thesaltymouse.bsky.social in a Salsola soda dominated diked unmanaged pond on a cloudy day. Though the species is generally considered a tidal marsh obligate dependent on Salicornia, recent research has shown that they are much more generalist within wetland habitat. #SMHM #SanFranciscoEstuary

Got some footage of the @kingtides.bsky.social overtopping the outer berm at Santa Venetia Marsh. There is a known population of @thesaltymouse.bsky.social here. Winter #KingTides are likely the deadliest time of the year for SMHM. Luckily the weather was pretty mild during these tides. 🌊🧂🐀🌊

As many of you are aware, science is in a state of turmoil in the United States. Recent efforts to drastically reduce government workforces and research funding for science will lead to many adverse consequences for Earth’s remaining natural ecosystems.

The American Society of Mammalogists (ASM) is the world’s largest and oldest professional organization devoted to the study of mammals. As a global leader in the science of mammalogy, it behooves us to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to our core mission: to promote science as the basis for managing and conserving mammals, to diversify the field of mammalogy, and to advance the scientific understanding of mammals globally. This means we stand committed to supporting all members of our scientific community regardless of ancestry, color, national origin, marital status, veteran status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, age, disability, or political affiliation. Science is enhanced when diversity is enriched.

ASM will continue to offer scholarships and grants to promote mammal conservation, recognize diverse mammalogists for their important contributions to the field through scholarships and awards, maintain the operations of the IDEA Committee, and pursue other efforts central to our core mission. Super excited that this amazing book is finally available for preorder. It was written by over 50 Indigenous Peoples from around the world and contains stories, poetry, and critical thought pieces on how TEK is used and extracted from our communities and what folks are doing to protect it.

Hey #hydrology folks! Seeking recommendations for in situ saline water flow/velocity monitoring equipment. Right now looks like Badger Meter is most common for research. I would appreciate any insights folks have about brands to favor or avoid. Including a SMHM doing hydro stuff for visibility. 🧂🐁

Sometimes I look at historic aerials and see all of the Bay Area cities build on fill, on top of marshes, and I cannot comprehend that they could source, transport, grade, and compact that much fill in the short time that those communities were built. Why can't we fill tidal restorations that fast?

King tides coupled with tornado-warning-strength west winds means our East Bay marshes are getting hammered with extraordinarily high tides, some of which are extremely vulnerable already (esp those on the Richmond Shoreline). Think good thoughts for our salty little endangered friends out there. 🧂🐁
