We are such fans & so sorry to hear about the loss of Jane Yolen, who wrote a wonderful story for us in which a girl flies off in a hot air balloon. We like to imagine her soaring away to new destinations, now. RIP and thank you for the stories that will live on forever.

By Jane Yolen Arbora watched her father as he worked on their yellow hot-air balloon. His hands were swift, sure. The bright afternoon sun glinted off his goggles. That made the tough cords running from basket to bag seem to glow. He used a small twister to turn all the final bolts so that nothing would come loose as they sailed. There would be another round of checkups on the "airship," as Papa called it-and then in the early morning. after a good sleep, and a better breakfast, they would be off. Arbora thought the "airship" was actually more like a war canoe. She'd read about those in her adventure books. She endlessly studied the photogravure portraits of fierce warriors standing by their large boats. Papa had told her all about the warriors he'd encountered on his journeys, about their graciousness, their hospitality. And about their amazing medicines when he'd fallen terribly ill while on one visit. Papa was signaling he was finished with the checkup by waving the twister at her. The theme was “the future,” and I wrote about an 11-year-old girl whose elderly neighbor slips her a key to a cache of books. The child has never seen books before, so she shows them to her mother, and they’re very excited. Happy ending! That story lodged in my mind, and I turned it into something much darker and more complex.“

got my contributor copy of @kazoomagazine.com & the rose o'neill comic i drew looks even better in print!!! the drawing issue is something i would have gone nuts for as an 8-10 yr old kid, it's full of fun projects & how-tos & art. thank you erin for the honor ❤️
