Childhood lessons from my mother, a public educator, that continue to guide me today: “always consider the source” and “you are the company you keep”. A Canadian who lives in Alberta on Treaty Land.

In today’s Legislative Assembly, the NDP requested an Emergency Debate on 🆎 health care crisis. Min. Jones said based on their initiatives and data, there is no crisis (ED utilization ⬇️ from 100% to 80%, ED inpatients ⬇️ 50%). Speaker McIver denied the request. UCP voted to adjourn an hour early.

“Each of those signatures represents a conversation many of the people who signed were not aware that public funding goes towards independent schools.” “We need people who value public education to continue to be engaged.” ~ Alicia Taylor #RedForEdAB edmontonjournal.com/news/politic...

“Food insecurity is not healthy for the people affected nor for Alberta society. In fact, food insecurity is a major risk factor for physical and mental health problems, which adds preventable costs to an already stretched health system.” (L. McIntyre & N. Willows) calgaryherald.com/opinion/colu...

Opinion: Celebrating food bank numbers obscene and insulting

High food bank use is not a cause for celebration; rather it is an indication of rising financial hardship in this province.

“The system isn’t failing because it’s universal; it’s failing because it has been deliberately underfunded, understaffed and the infrastructure and policies to build up staffing is withheld.” “Right now, our healthcare teams are performing a miracle under their provincial constraints.”

This is an excellent summary of some of the data on our HC system and why we are at where we are. Please take a moment to read. Govt has been neglecting investment in workforce and hosp/LTC capacity for years... we are paying the price now.
