One of my views in Katmai National Park last week. Count the bears! The salmon are coming in and the bears are hungry!
I can't speak to the traditional beliefs about it, but I can say that it's a neat reminder of how our brains use context cues like shadows to ground objects in reality. When we experience a moment that doesn't fit our mental model, we 'glitch out' & well... "the sun rests on the brains" FITS.
The "zero shadow" phenomenon is only true for perfectly vertical straight-sided objects, but it's trippy to look at. The State Museum of Natural and Cultural History of Hawai'i ran a contest to come up with a name & landed on 'Lāhainā' which means "cruel sun" in Hawai'ian.
Subsolar points are where the sun's parallel rays hit the Earth at exactly 90° at its zenith. Because of the axial tilt of the Earth, it travels around the tropics in a zig-zag pattern, passing each point twice a year.
Twice a year, Hawai'i experiences a strange moment where the sun appears to be exactly overhead & anything that is completely vertical casts no shadow. Let's learn about Lāhainā Noon, subsolar points & 'Kau ka lā i ka lolo', meaning "the sun rests on the brains."
it’s so wild that the thesis for the AI bubble is that 27B param models are good enough to do all menial office labor, and once the data centers are built moore’s law will just…stop. 10 trillion dollars to build warehouses full of compute that will run on your iphone for free by 2030.
ONCE AGAIN the music industry overlooks bandcamp
New: the highly controversial AI music generator Suno was hacked. The hacker sent us Suno source code; it shows the company scraped YouTube Music, Deezer, and Genius. In all, Suno scraped *decades* worth of music from the internet. Obviously didn't pay artists www.404media.co/hack-reveals...
i think everyone in the world should be on permanent UTC. no timezones, no time change. i’m completely serious.
you know what they say about sports: it’s as much mental as it is physical
The world is being destroyed by Gadget Guys™ who want to optimize everything and build millions of efficiencies that no one asked for. We used to relegate these men to Sharper Image and Brookstone where they mostly harmless, tinkering with their own lifes. They currently run much of the world.
when the animal uprising comes i hope they’ll know how many sealion videos i liked
There are always one of only two songs in my head. It's either Clair de Lune by Debussy or Abracadabra by Lady Gaga.
The future is running linux to play games made in Godot and listening to music you paid to own on your digital music player and watching blurays from your collection on a device that doesn't connect to the internet.
So many folks at #pyconus showing the amount of work they personally have to do going asymptotic because of genai output but the vibe in the outside world is that firms are still chasing the post-covid trend of laying off their technical staff. Something’s gonna give.
i’m at #pyconus for the first time in many years and it’s at the long beach convention center and i’m having a lovely time and i’m grateful to the organizers, the attendees and the venue, BUT what is up with these chairs?
