Biologist, just fed up at this point because *gestures everywhere*

Peak D&B memory: Getting a couple of no look jackpots by slapping the button randomly on a lightup "spin to win" game while yelling "i can do this all day baby!" then winning some "deal or no deal", earning enough tickets for a deep fryer. Oreos, jalapeno poppers & bagel bites got fried that night

Me: The new agent harness is great. You feed your tokens into the machine. Then you run simulations which, if successful, produces tickets. If they fail you have to buy more tokens and keep running the sims. Once you have enough tickets you can redeem them Boss: are you at dave & busters, yes or no

Dont know how many times I had to say “hey you know how llms can string the wrong words together (‘hallucinate’ ugh) because it is autocomplete? Alphafold does the same shit with protein structures” Thinking you can get real analysis out of it is stupid

AlphaFold was always bait-and-switch; now Google confirms it. A hyper-narrow bioinformatrics model with actual science bolted on whose guesses can be experimentally checked was never a licence for socially-applied slop at scale, but it's done its job. Effort transferred to LLMs.

Now is a good reminder that machine learning is a rebranding of statistical learning. Reinforcement learning is something I first came across in control theory. Many ML formulations are from information theory, a much more theoretically grounded discipline that's been around for decades.

There's a reason why "these are just statistical predictions" hasn't caught on in the discourse, and it's not the tech press. It's that people see them reading and writing and reasoning and scheming and they realize that the stochastic-parrots framing is outdated and inadequate to the moment

The way math has given these guys the delusion that they have control over the universe. The self-soothing thought that it brings order to the chaos. They will never give up that baby blanket.

Hell yea I can't wait for season 2 of the show that makes go "oh god there probably would be fuckass multiverse version of me that DIDNT stay with our wife to chase an ambition and now he has buyers remorse/FOMO and wants to steal my life"

These damn memes. "Biology is just applied chemistry..." I'ma stop ya right there. Its not applied nothin, it simply IS chemistry, which IS physics too. Math and philosophy are definitely not any of those 3 things.

Some advice I've gotten from a teacher. "If you are procrastinating on something, just half ass it now. Because if you can't do it now, you will do it rushed and half assed later. So save yourself the stress and do it badly now"

Ai-guys have the hardest time not confusing models with reality so they turn to quantum "cuz particle movement/behavior is too simple" or to computation because branching conditional operations are powerful. But biomolecule conditionals reshape the material around them in ways beyond looped voltage

Are stacks of paper with human calculations sentient and conscious? (Note that you can't replace a brain with humans doing calculations on paper because a brain doesn't run software.)

And that's the hilarious thing about it. Rocks' sentience cannot ever be inferred as a function of not knowing how they work! To claim rocks are sentient rocks would need to do so many things consistent with sentience for such a claim to even be slightly plausible.

Very difficult not to see an alleged philosopher of AI and futurist as a fraud if he doesn't even understand that LLMs are nothing more than extremely complicated y = f(x). If no user puts an x in, they are inert; no consciousness, no life, nothing. This isn't even a difficult theoretical conundrum.

Amazing how much *context* can change things. "Heh nice. Taco Bell poop jokes" "Oh thats Katie Miller? No way this has anything but dumbass horribleass messedupass intentions, fuck that nevermind"

It's crazy that a country as obsessed with war and national security as the US hasn't embraced renewables. It's a fantastic way to harden some basic infrastructure across the entire country. Good luck hacking a powerplant to take a city's electricity offline if everybody is on renewables microgrids

Really what they call "emergence" is just the result of ignoring the role of a human in the system, and how active a participant we are.

What do you mean there isnt a Women’s Warehouse for getting affordable tailored suits? What do you mean there aren't granular measurements of women like ours for a nice fit? How the hell?

If you have a “theory of consciousness” but you cant explain anything in terms of or connect it to a single material process, you dont have shit. You just have a bunch of abstractions you circle around endlessly like a drain, explaining nothing at all. Symbol grounding problem but for ideas

Is there a separate designation for gender apathy? I think of non-binary like "Dont box me in"/"I do any and everything I want" but I just simply do not give a damn what gets tossed my way. "You're a boy" K. "Thats girly" K. "What are your pronouns?" Whatever. Yes. It doesnt feel like anything.

Good gods Analytical Idealism is even worse than Panpsychism. Why do people keep coming up with this stuff just because they don't understand how things work?
