it's kinda wild that the obscure knowledge contest as a social practice has survived essentially unchanged—Jeopardy is still on the air, bar trivia is still practiced everywhere—into the age of google, wikipedia, and smartphones.

This carved stone plaque was found in St Francis' Row in Cashel, and it is believed to be the sign for a tavern that was known as The Cat & Bagpipes, that once stood on the main street. It may date to as early as the 16-17th century, and offers a glimpse of Cashel's social life from centuries ago

The events of the Odyssey would have been set 500 years previously at the time that Homer composed them, equivalent to writing about the voyages of Columbus today. For example Homer probably imagined Iron Age hoplite armor, while actual Bronze Age Mycenean armor looked like this:
