Happy Easter Monday! What better way to celebrate this holy after-day by checking out a book on the sanctity of love, clubbing, & kink? Today, I’m looking at @nivikthejackal.bsky.social ‘s chapbook, published by @kithbooks.bsky.social ! Link to review in the replies! #BRIB #BookSky #queerbooks

Grief is a strange thing to bear

Last Thursday I forgot myself,
described your laugh to a stranger
as if I were the sort of person
who bares such things as grief.

It’s been how too many years
since that sound was borne
up from your stomach,
an unstoppable force, erupting
in flashing teeth and unchecked mirth.

Felt strangely good to name it,
this remembered sound, vulnerable too,
as if showing not just my sorrow
but my jugular. It was worth it
to give you another witness
if only for a moment.

You’ve been gone these how
too many years, and
my grief is a hungry bear
prowling, hoping to survive

winter with no shelf stores,
its own body the only place
for holding on to what matters.

There are seasons, passing strange,
when it hibernates, forgotten until
erupting from its stable of solitude to
consume everything.
Its way of hanging onto life
is to flash its sharp and
vicious teeth, a look akin to laughter
but remember –
those teeth are meant
to devour you.

You were no stranger to grief,
knew its every tooth and claw and
how to laugh in its snarling face,
ingestible though you were.
I hold that sound inside myself.
You, I will not forget.

In Grief is Not Shelf Stable, Jamez Terry performs magic trick after magic trick, transforming grief into a hungry bear, and a pile of groceries overflowing the counters, and a handful of fiddlehead ferns, and a mountain range, and Schrodinger’s cat. Terry’s writing is full of vivid images that invite the reader to share in all the complex emotions that come with loss. Yet despite these many portraits of grief, the collection is not without hope. Terry continually reminds us that life goes on, that despite all we carry we are, “still living, still seeking, still hungry for love.”
