I never know what to say in interviews when they ask me how I go about creating characters, because I feel like they want me to talk about charts and diagrams, when the answer is “I make up a guy and then think about him a lot”

My Favorite Bit: K.L. Schroeder talks about NO ONE TO HOLD THE DISTANT DEAD
K.L. Schroeder is joining us today to talk about their novel, No One to Hold the Distant Dead. Here’s the publisher’s description: Inga Nyström chose to leave Earth and help the colony of Nordenmark escape a looming ecological disaster. But by the time she arrives, the catastrophic degradation of the planet's terraformed environment has already passed the point of no return, and she finds its people defeated, sleepwalking through a slow-moving death.

Me to 3yo: What do you want for your birthday party theme? 3yo: “Poopoo & peepee theme! We can get apple juice for the pee, so a skeleton pees and you drink the skeleton pee but it’s okay because it’s juice” Me: ..K I was thinking like “dinosaurs” but let’s put a pin in “piss fountain of the dead”
Still thinking about this note I found in the children’s section of the public library when I worked there back in 2018. This kid tried to warn us…
I'm so slow, but NO ONE TO HOLD THE DISTANT DEAD by @klschroeder.bsky.social is a haunting elegiac wonder, a slow dream of empty skies that asks the only question worth asking- what is to be done? "Let the dead rest, and fight for what we still might be able to save.” Beautiful unflinching work
do you need an amazing read?? “Beautiful and heartbreaking. It’s sadly rare to find an author like Schroeder who approaches the non-human with such compassion and respect. A must read.” No One To Hold the Distant Dead by @klschroeder.bsky.social get it here! psychopomp.com/product/no-o...
Life is too short not to read a book that was written well and by an actual human being.
This is a cliff on comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. It's about 1 km tall. If you jumped from the top, it would take you 47 minutes to reach the bottom, and you'd probably be OK.

Alysa Liu telling 60 Minutes “I love struggling, it makes me feel alive” is a legit revolutionary statement from a Bay Area native in a time when copious amounts of time and resources are being put toward convincing us to opt out of experiencing struggle, friction and self-actualization

NEW VIDEO ALERT! Today on Bar Cart Bookshelf we're talking about NO ONE TO HOLD THE DISTANT DEAD by K.L. Schroeder. An ecofiction meditation on colony collapse and memory loss at the edge of space, a powerful and transportive work of SF. Our drink is the Godhavn: cachaça kissed with pom and anise.
While I love the current SFF interest in all things fungi/mushroom, I am eagerly awaiting the humble slime mold’s turn to shine. ✨
