Founded in 1398, Mount Grace Priory in North Yorkshire is the best-preserved Carthusian monastery in England. Unlike communal orders, Carthusian monks lived as hermits in solitary contemplation. Each monk occupied an individual two-story cell with its own private walled garden, where food was passed through a small hatch to preserve silence. Following the 16th-century Dissolution of the Monasteries, parts of the site were later incorporated into a 17th-century manor house, preserving a unique slice of monastic history.

Adding the finishing touches 🖌️ The image in this ancient #Greek cup depicts a helmet-maker concentrating on adding the final touches to a Corinthian helmet. 📷️ Attic red-figure pottery stemmed cup depicting a scene of daily life, The Antiphon Painter, 490–480 BCE. AN1896-1908.G.267

The cup with its scene of ancient daily life had already been broken and repaired in antiquity before it was placed into a tomb, possibly of a helmet-maker. It was found only in fragments sometime in the 19th century and subsequently heavily restored by adding missing parts of the vessel and reconstructing their decoration, including the entire central part of the image and parts of its surrounding decorative frame. The West Coast Cumbria Hoard was discovered by detectorists Justin Bell and Daniel Boakes on farmland at Beckermet #OTD in 2014. It comprises 20 silver Viking objects dating from 850-950. 📸Portable Antiquities Scheme

My photo collage shows various copper-alloy objects, now green with corrosion, from the Melsonby Iron Age Hoard on display at the Yorkshire Museum in York. Top left: a copper-alloy bridle bit. The metal rod was placed in the ponies mouth and the rings at each end rested on the cheeks Middle left: an ornate copper-alloy finial Bottom left: Decorative horse harness fitting Top right: a view of the so-called ‘Block’. The block is made up of 88 individual artefacts which were threaded together, wrapped in fabric and then buried. Over time the objects have become fused together due to iron corrosion and appear as a large orangey-brown block of corroded metal. Objects in the block include horse harnesses, spearheads, wagon parts, and more! New discovery: A monumental 2,500-year-old marble statue has been unearthed at Sardis in Türkiye. The 2.2-meter-high statue, the sculpture depicts a young man and is dated to 470–450 BC. During the Roman period, the statue was reused as paving material and laid face down,...🧵1/2 🏺 #archaeology

#MosaicMonday 🏺 Giant fishes could be a tricky catch for 3-4 C #Roman period boatmen in this lively scene from Utica, Tunisia. British missionary Nathan Davis excavated on behalf of British Museum at Carthage + Utica, also retrieving Greek, Latin + Phoenician finds that arrived at Museum 1857-1860.

Aug 3: Feast of the translation of Óláfr (†1030), king of Norway and its patron saint. Forty church dedications also known across the British Isles. Bishop Grimkell, a prelate Olaf had brought from England, translated his body to St Clement’s Church, Niðarós, #OTD in 1031.
