Really interesting fracture morphology to this zircon (from an Archean shear zone in s. Ontario's Superior Craton). It looks positively dilated in the brittle realm: onion skin style sheeting along growth bands and then further blown apart along those new intracrystal mechanical discontinuities. ⚒️

10 June marked 140 years since the volcanic ⚒️🧪 eruption of Mt Tarawera near Rotorua 🇳🇿. My main memory of this famous image is as a slide in 1st year geology course where the lecturer pointed out the figures in the middle: 'Look how excited they are! They must be volcanologists!'
