⚒️ 🧪 A M6.8 earthquake struck Kyushu, Japan today. Large quakes in Japan are common and often pass without much notice, but this one is serious - instead of occurring offshore in the subduction zone, it is a shallow, strike-slip event near Kumamoto. Damage and deaths have already been reported.

Just like it takes only 30 people to have a 50-50 chance of a shared birthday, regions with a long history of earthquakes can have a multi-earthquake anniversary. For SoCal, it’s June 28 - 1966, 1991, and 1992.

Very damaging earthquakes in Venezuela. @judithgeology.bsky.social provides a preliminary summary of what may have been a M7.2 and M7.5 doublet - or a complex rupture. Scientifically, this will be hard to untangle because later P/S arrivals will overlap the wavefield from the first event.

This is the best tectonic map of the area I've been able to dig up. These earthquakes occur in the region where the strike-slip boundary between the Caribbean and South America plates bifurcates. The Oca-Ancon system continues W along the coast; the Bocono Fault runs to the SW inland.
