It is wild how, across the board, our overlords are like "what if we made the bread and circuses more expensive"
This is the danger of prioritizing the I don't like the aesthetic as the critique. For people who like fighting, the show was good + the military was celebrated. Sport is magical at hiding the politics even when it seems unhideable and washing away the corruption even when it seems unwashable.
The UFC won't punish him. The UFC's incentive structure will reward him. The White House will share images of Hokit draping his NFT chain on Trump's neck. And apologists will say it is just an act. Following the Colby, Sean, Conor, and even Chael precedent. @motherjones.com @inaeoh.bsky.social
Josh Hokit’s slur against Michelle Obama concluded an evening already teeming with vulgarity. "Let reminders of it attach itself to every oligarch, Republican, Trump family member, and corporation that went along with this cage fight."
really insightful take as always from @dieworkwear.bsky.social (+ the reason why it is dangerous to lean to far into a critique of the aesthetics and dismissing the sport rather than focusing on all the corruption and money being wasted)
IMO, hosting this MMA event at the WH is part of a larger project to rebrand the GOP as a populist party, shedding the Alex P Keaton stereotype it once carried. And in doing so, make them seem like the right party for working class people, even as they cut taxes for the rich & slash social services
This is the story. Questions of taste is interesting and useful, but not where the focus needs to be.
So this admin lets a private company, that the president owns stock in, use the White House and grounds for a pay-per-view spectacle using troops & staff, rents out ads everywhere, and has it streaming on the company whose monopolistic merger it just approved. Grift never ending
The % of ads featuring Dana White is really something - trucks, crypto, insurance, the United States. 0 featuring fighters. Can't think of another major, or even minor, sport where you see the CEO of the company and not the athletes making money off commercials. Same with the pre-event promotion.
Great talking to Joe Miller @financialtimes.com about the less than subtle intersection of sports & politics/intersection of Trump & the UFC that is playing out on the White House lawn tonight.
Trump stages show of political domination with UFC bout on White House lawn ft.trib.al/EBCQUjY
One critique of the White House fights is an aesthetic one. And I think that critique matters. But the more significant one in my mind is the amount of money exchanging hands and pockets being filled (+ those hands generally being quite dirty and those pockets quite corrupt).

Loving @inaeoh.bsky.social's turn towards the @motherjones.com combat sports journalist! Also, @juliekedzie.bsky.social and @jennmcclearen.bsky.social say a bunch of smart stuff about the about the absence of women fighters at the UFC White House event!

This piece by Dr. Gounder both reminds us of the courage and value of Grant Wahl’s sports writing (and what we have lost) by covering the many public health failures surrounding the current ebola outbreak right as travel ramps up for the World Cup. Reminder to self to read everything Céline writes.
Dr. Céline Gounder (wife of the late Grant Wahl) just shared this piece: Grant Wahl Should Be Covering this World Cup. It touches on the Ebola outbreak in the Congo and reminds us, no one was better at juxtaposing the world & soccer than Grant. Give it a read. open.substack.com/pub/grantwah...
Thank you to @kylethegreen.bsky.social for all the insights into the transactional Trump-Dana White alliance, the controversial aesthetics of MMA, and for introducing me to someone named Anderson Silva!! www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
Why Trump's cage fight could hurt the UFC
Dana White stood by Trump during Covid and Jan. 6. The White House brawl may dent their alliance.

I had a great time talking to @inaeoh.bsky.social about the Dana White Donald Trump alliance. If sport is, as sociologists contend, a highly visible platform where society tells the story about what we are and who we could be, the event on the White House lawn deserves a lot of analysis because…—>
Wrote about "the UFC" and it was...........fascinating!!!
sports.yahoo.com/mma/article/... - Very smart observation from @benfowlkes.bsky.social - amplifying a trend that we saw way back in TUF and that rose to extreme levels during covid. Also such a stark contrast to every single other major and semi-major sport. Highly recommended read!
