Neurobiologist & Neurologist at Cambridge. My lab focuses on the biology of astrocytes/neurons & develops human organoid disease models to study their role in neurodegeneration and traumatic injuries.
Our new collaborative study with Srinjan Basu, led by Alex Kingston, is in preLights!

A human corticospinal organoid-slice connectoid model informs enhancer strategies for post-injury axon regrowth
A human corticospinal organoid-slice connectoid model informs enhancer strategies for post-injury axon regrowth
Gibbons et al. present a human corticospinal organoid slice-based connectoid model, with physically separate but functionally coupled cortical and spinal regions. Allowing cell-type-specific observations, the platform uncovers a developmental maturation-dependent decline in human axon regeneration and a transcriptional program intrinsic to cortical projection neurons that, when targeted, promotes repair post-injury.

When the #spinalcord is damaged, the resulting #paralysis is usually considered permanent. Now, a new #research approach using lab-grown organoid models led by @lakatoslab.bsky.social from 🇬🇧 @cam.ac.uk suggests that it actually might be reversed.
Lab-grown model shows ‘irreversible’ spinal cord damage may be reversed
Cambridge scientists have grown miniature circuits in the lab that mimic how the brain and spinal cord connect up, which underlies our movements. They used this model to show how damage to these conne...

Congratulations to George, Andras, @lakatoslab.bsky.social and collaborators for the publication of the human motor axis in dish! As a neurologist, it was amazing to see the corticospinal tract in vitro and how it can reveal new strategies for axon regrowth after injury. www.cell.com/cell-reports...
