This is such an great feature (Rebecca is great!), and I've been thinking about it for a few days. IMO, "Influencer" in the ten-years-ago sense was really a LOT of jobs (spokesmodel/copywriter/etc.) but now it's morphing, at least in part, into "intentionally annoying person" which feels worse.

deeply unserious situation happening in my life (having seen people leave their dishes out to dry on the kitchen counters, which is not allowed, i left the inner pot of my rice cooker out for the second time ever after i used it on sunday, and it has since disappeared)

FIFA is organising this from 24 september to 4 october, having announced it last october, even though there was already a biannual competition that this year is being played from 24 july to 26 august

having already had a big real meal for lunch do i go to the grocery store and then go back to make dinner in the rice cooker (at the cost of likely not doing anything productive for the rest of the night) or drink a meal replacement shake and plough forward with reading this book and taking notes

was at the pub yesterday and encountered a few odyssey snobs (not academics but like people who did humanities degrees in undergrad lol) who were like i would never watch it bc i read it in college and no modern adaptation could do justice to it

If the academy gets pulled into coming out swinging against the biggest adaptation of Homer in probably a couple generations off the back of one prominent scholar deciding to be Reviewer 2 to Nolan's work, it will say, IMO, pretty damning things about academia's ability to foster public engagement.

i'm not going to do this but i will say some of these questions are literally things that have never occurred to me. it has never occurred to me to reread books in whole (as opposed to for retrieving particular info) or to have a top 5 of books or to remember a book that 'got [me] into reading'.

In a college sociology class in the late 1980s I was assigned a Marxist analysis of education that argued that the US education system is designed primarily to produce efficient workers for the labor market. And now Trump’s Department of Education is just tweeting it out.
