A new reconstruction suggests the outbreak was already widespread in the gold-mining town of Mongbwalu by January. It wasn’t officially declared until 15 May. Why did no-one raise the alarm? Patients flee and Ebola treatment area is burned in Ituri. One of the most desparately forgotten and exploited places in the world. It's no wonder it's people are suspicious and afraid. May the good people of Alima recover and safely continue their work. Epidemics are stopped with communities.

Kai Kupferschmidt@kakape.bsky.social · 3mo agoThe outbreak is centered on Ituri province, but cases have now been detected in North Kivu (Goma) and South Kivu (Bukavu), plus two in Uganda. As I've said before given rapid growth of this outbreak and that it spread under the radar until last week, we should expect cases elsewhere to pop up.
Looking for updates on the Ebola epidemic and all I see are stories on flights being diverted for travelling while Congolese 🙄

The way West/North folk on here are making the Ebola outbreak about their own world and governments is giving me whiplash. All my support to the exemplary responders in DRC.
Very worrying confirmation of what is obviously a large Ebola outbreak in Ituri province in DRC. The area is rife with conflict and displacement. Like throwing a match on gasoline.
