I'll always admire Ralph Bakshi because in the '70s, when Disney was on the verge of being stripped for parts and televised cartoons were viewed as bottom of the barrel fare, this guy decides "I'm gonna make animated films and I'm gonna try to do it on my terms."

This extends to the animated movies of that year. 2002 is the year where traditional 2D animation looked the most polished it had ever been and studios would never allow that to happen again.

agreed on all counts, but i’d like to add that classic ranma is host to some fabulous cartooniness—much superior to anything i've seen from the remake i'd reckon. it's relatively low-key and infrequent, tomomi mochizuki sets a very nice slice of life template that makes the funny stuff even funnier

The remake tries to compensate this by basically being louder. This is why the facial expressions in the remake are more cartoony and extreme, why characters blush more in romantic moments and cry harder in dramatic moments. The remake designs by Hiromi Taniguchi deliver good, cartoony faces but (+)
