We gotta stop assigning "new" to recency. I have played so few of the games in that direct that every other game was new for me - even if they aren't all "new releases". I think the Switch 2 library is just bursting with new games for me after that direct.

It's so cool that, after a gen where the switch was a downgrade, the majority of people who only have a switch 2 are getting just completely flooded with these great ports. Look at this library, man. MH Wilds runs on there???

I think the disparate level of detail between Link and other characters opens a lot of space that I'm enjoying running with. We've got Link, someone who is more real in the sense of his ability to impact time, who looks more realised than the castle town people, who have very little impact.

I have slept on it and my excitement for Ocarina remake has only gotten larger. Fascinated by a maximilist view of hyrule that creates more of a pull on my mind and situates those places really heavily so that when everything goes to hell in the second half it feels even worse.

This is a great thread. Why do we assign the childhood experience of OoT this weight and depth as a result of its design but then boil an entire design process down to a tagline for the remake? As Abram says, decisions aren't emotionally neutral and this trailer was full of them.

We can all feel however we'd like to about OOT but the idea that it's just unreal engine slop/has no art style/Nintendo hired this man etc is a bit incurious to me. A) this isn't a realistic world, B) even if it was, realism isn't emotionally neutral (and is art direction!)

Thinking bout the Ocarina remake and imagining a world where they only show the first three temples in the marketing. First three temples are the same, maybe the odd little change. But then when you get to the temple of time the whole thing gets blown apart. Just a totally reshaped experience.

Told myself I wouldn't start up Onimusha until I beat the Flood stage in Blood Dungeon - it's the last one I need. Little did I know Flood is nigh on impossible, so jokes on me I guess.

Super weird to show and big up Jin Sakai returning at the end of the Yotei trailer given the backlash its female lead character and genderfluid actor received. At best it seems naive not to see how that looks.

impressively anti-intellectual! Criticism does not exist to predict the audience Metacritic score. Criticism is not consumer guidance. Critics are not reviewing kitchen appliances. Actually! A critic who reliably reproduces popular opinion is fucking useless.

And since press does still count, I ended up reviewing the reviewers too. Every outlet and creator gets a trust score based on one question: When they reviewed a game, did players end up agreeing? You can see who consistently calls games the way players see them, and who doesn't. Again, simple and fair.

Thomas Mahler best known for metldowns on Twitter/Era and the Ori series launched a website similar to Opencritic/Metacritic where user reviews accounting 2/3 of the score. The thought process is that the review score shouldn't stay untouched after the original release. videogamescritic.com

That's a fine way to look at it, but my experience with the GTA games is that they're so vast and multifaceted that while some aspects are problematic and others are so-so, there's also moments of real brilliance and beauty in them. Some of my most transcendent gaming experiences have been with GTA.
