Every linguistics student will learn in an intro class that multilingualism is more common in the world than monolingualism. For years I never had a proper citation for that claim, but I just read Blyth (1995) and found this! Yes, it's still logic rather than statistics, but it's something.

This semester's phonetics students did from-scratch documentation projects on an awesome variety of languages, including: Ilocano, Klallam, Bengali, Thai, Samoan, Tongan, ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, Hakka, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Palauan, Nepali, Vietnamese, Kibembe, Kape, and Boricua Spanish.

The question of whether the US should or should not have an official language is uninteresting. Of actual concern: the recent EO is directly linked to an anti-immigrant, anti-education "English-only" movement which will add to the stigmatization of other languages and the people who speak them.
