A lot of media coverage of the ‘AI’ reading of the Herculaneum scrolls really fails to understand what’s happened here. There’s no language processing happening, the AI/ML is not trained on a corpus of texts or language. It can detect ink to see shapes. HUMAN EXPERTS are then transcribing the text.

While having a bit of a declutter (NOT normal for me), I found a couple of used James Thin notebooks. The best notebooks EVER: gorgeous cream thin-lined paper. If memory serves, they were called 'Muriel Sparks' cos originally made for her. Wish they were still made...
