Spent some time today walking among alpine wildflowers. Way better than scrolling, even with the flies.

I just spent two days in Kelowna BC and it was somewhere around 33 - 35 degrees (92-95) and I do not function over 26 degrees and HOW DO PEOPLE LIVE HERE? I saw people JOGGING. Voluntarily, not because a bear was chasing them. I was malfunctioning just walking down the street in the shade.

When I drafted Adrift I included scenes with air quality issues and people wearing masks. While I was revising Adrift, BC experienced the worst wildfire season in history--it has since been topped. Summer weather now regularly includes "smoke". I'd never experienced this in Vancouver prior to 2017

When I was doing edits on Appleseed during the pandemic, my editor complimented a bit I’d added about people wearing masks in every American city. She thought it was about covid. But it’d been there the whole time, because I lived in the west and knew wildfire season was coming for everywhere.

I'm so angry this is our every summer now -watching Canada burn, watching ecosystems die and homes burn, & we just keep digging oil out of the ground. Our politicians keep spending public dollars on the oil industry; subsidies, more pipelines, sending our clean energy to run LNG plants. Insanity.

When this time of year rolls around I think a lot about the challenge of book discoverability, how a small number of books get noticed relative to the tens of thousands that will come each year. I think of the awards that nominate the same titles. The best-of lists with mostly the same titles. 1/?

I don't know what happened, but sales of the paperback version of my book spiked to surprising levels over the past few weeks (very high for a book that came out in 2023!) - so that is a lovely pre-holiday gift to me. Thank you mysterious universe and book-buyers!!! #Adrift
