Thank you for highlighting this key aspect! Most analyses of the 2016 coup and its aftermath highlight the purges, arrests, etc. But @hakkitas.bsky.social did some serious data work on the building of the state. I was glad to contribute to how AKP narratives made this possible.

Since 2016, Turkish public sector jobs grew from 3.56 to 5.37M. Using these stats, @liselhintz.bsky.social and @hakkitas.bsky.social write: "Power consolidation is achieved" by restructuring jobs so that "a larger share of the population holds a direct material stake in the survival" of the regime.

I am so glad I am out of Trump-era DC. The pathetically performative displays of force - including an MRAP caravan haplessly turning the wrong way down my Navy Yard street - were one of a few last straws.

Elon Musk is unambiguously calling for a violent race war. This is far from unprecedented. The Rwandan Genocide was stoked and enabled by Felicien Kabuga, the wealthy owner of the RTLM radio station that helped coordinate the genocide and used euphemisms like "go to work" to signal attacks.

Two separate screenshots in boxes. The first is a screenshot of tweets from Elon Musk reposting "Do not make peace with evil. Destroy it." and "That's what it has come to" while quote-tweeting "Elon Musk was always right: You either fight back or you die." The second box is a text from an Al Jazeera article. It reads: Kabuga, once one of the wealthiest men in Rwanda, was the co-founder and funder of Radio Television Libre des Mille Collines (RTLM), a station established in 1993 that regularly called Tutsis “cockroaches” and encouraged people to “cut down the tall trees”, in reference to Tutsis. Once the genocide started, the station broadcast the names of people to be killed and information about where they could be found.
