We’d love you to join us for the annual Inclusive Church/SMITF conference on disability and church, which this year (again) focuses on neurodiversity. (I’ll be co-leading a workshop on ADHD, movement and worship.)
Ahead of today's All Kinds of Minds synod motion, it might be good to share this...
Powerful speech from Rev Alice Kemp #synod on how her autism diagnosis helped her 'start being who I am and to stop hiding so much of me. I’ve begun to recognise that I am fearfully and wonderfully made - and it is all of me that God has called into ministry and indeed my whole life' #GeneralSynod
As more voices share a range of responses to the motion at #Synod, largely very positive, people might have questions. There's a great resources page on the Neurodiversity Working Group's website which might help. Scroll down here www.churchofengland.org/resources/ba... /10

'Scripture begins, not with deficit, but with grace.' Robert Thompson
“Neurodiversity is not a problem to be solved in the life of the Church, it is a gift.” We mush commit ourselves to dismantling barriers. Archbishop Sarah Mullaley #GeneralSynod
ND people are "not problems to be solved but blessings bearing the image of God" (Craddock). Story of objections to a young man with Down Syndrome serving in his church - hopes this motion will change such prejudice so that "no one feels they need to leave part of themselves at the church door." /6
Fiona MacMillan now speaking at General #Synod in the debate on the 'All Kinds of Minds' motion on neurodivergent people in the church. She tells us that the church is diminished and overlooks abundance when we do not recognise the gifts of neurodivergent members and leaders, 1/
'Idealised and perfected images of the human body that come from the Greek and Roman world and not the gospel of Jesus Christ have often been prominent in Christian narratives...
"Jesus is good news for every human person and such very good news for our perplexed and anxious world. I do want us to be bolder—not by shouting louder, but by loving more." You can read my Synod presidential address here: archbishopofyork.org/news/york-general-synod-2026-presidential-address
In John 21 Jesus invites his disciples to cast their nets on the other side of the boat. Fiona invites us to cast our nets in new waters to discover abundance.
Neurodiversity debate. Fiona MacMillan, presenting the report, notes that we rightly talk about wanting more diversity but as a church don’t always welcome the diversity we have. #GeneralSynod
Fiona MacMillan references 'Thinking Differently About God' our first conference focusing primarily on neurodiversity in 2019, in the opening speech in All Kinds of Minds at #Synod
The letter Phil answers is extraordinary. I particularly want to stress, though, that as someone who works in a theological college, I’ve had a number of ordinands who either arrived with a diagnosis of neurodivergence or gained one while with us. The church would be poorer without any of them.
After some criticism of the #GeneralSynod neurodiversity motion, Canon Dr Phil Groves has written this lovely response. Phil is a fellow member of the Neurodiversity Working Group of the Church of England. The motion will be debated at #Synod this afternoon. viamedia.news/2026/07/10/b...

Later today #GeneralSynod debates All Kinds of Minds, a motion calling on the church to affirm the presence of neurodivergent people in the whole life of the church and to reconsider structures and processes which discriminate against and disadvantage neurodivergent people.
A quick primer thread ahead of the team's #GeneralSynod Neurodiversity Motion this afternoon, Friday 10th. Very informal, written in a personal, not official group, capacity. but it may be helpful. Neurodiversity is everyone. All kinds of minds/
SAVE THE DATE This year’s disability conference will be held on 24th and 25th October at St Martin-in-the-Fields and online. We are still fine tuning the details but we can say that this year’s conference will have a neurodiversity focus... Look out for registration later in the summer.
Good to be in another planning meeting for this year’s conference!
