Butterflies, moths, boats and railways. Based in Hertfordshire. Can you see the Swallowtail in my banner image?

Seemed to buck the local trend in VC20 last night with 294:48. Highlight Scarce Silver-lines (missed summer gen so NFY), Lunar Yellow Underwing (hindwing checked), 2 Plumed Fan-foot (hiding in greenhouse as usual) + 42 Small Mottled Willow, 4 Vestal also NFY Sallow & Brindled Green #teammoth

It's always a nice moment when you turn over an egg box in the morning (especially in a relatively quiet trap) in your VC20 garden and say hello I don't see you very often! A Small Wainscot, not a common Herts moth and only my 5th garden record in 20+ years #teammith

Two good but very wet nights in VC41 (Barry)with my travelling trap. In addition to the Mecyna asinalis I was pleased with 80:19 on Sun am & 108:25 Mon (probably more-it was raining & 4 egg boxes got left in the recycling! Only real star was a pristine Convolvulus Hawk-moth #teammoth #VC41Moths

Further to my earlier post, & my mystery moth in VC20. Still raining so photography is hard! It is the most docile moth I've experienced especially for an Agrotis! 20mm single wing, rich colouring. Can't get a view of the antennae but will try again! #teammoth All suggestions appreciated!

An exceptionally full & soggy trap in VC20 last night & still needs a double check! 384:35 macro. 119 LYUW☹️. One moth stood out, Obsidentify is struggling but keeps suggesting Crescent Dart! 20mm single wing. Best photos at the moment. Alternative suggestions? #teammoth

I intercepted Stu at Welwyn North on Thursday to give my support. 24 hours later someone sadly felt the need to end their life at the station. Please support his quest to raise £10000+ for #Samaritans. #teammoth not moth related but I want to spread the word!

100 miles walked so far!!! 100 miles in 4 days 🙂. Peterborough bound as I type. Please donate: www.justgiving.com/page/highlan... Thanks to all who donate, repost, like & comment 💚 #ChieftainWalk

Highest macro count of the year last night in VC20 with 271:35, mostly LYUW & Straw Underwing + a high number of Centre-barred Sallow! No Vestal for a change though. Always nice to record Feathered Gothic, even nicer when there are 3! 2 female + 1 male! Treble-bar made a change as well. #teammoth

Today’s star moth in VC20 is a Convolvulus Hawk-moth-a UK lifer for me!!! I knew persistence would eventually pay off growing huge quantities of Tobacco (Nicotiana) plants beside the moth trap & kept well watered! Otherwise a much quieter trap of late just 172 : 31 macro species #Teammoth

I've been trapping/luring in Horning VC27 for 7 nights with my new trap! My 20 year+ garden macro list was 258. Macros have been superb, weather has helped but it's windy. 82 species which for this site is good. Highlight Mere Wainscot & Grey Arches. #teammoth

There are lifers, and there are LIFERS! New for my VC20 garden, new for 10k & very few county records - a FESTOON this morning!! Also NFY a very early Jersey Tiger, accompanied by Scarlet Tiger. Rather a lot of moths though with at least 92 species & over 400 moths! It was hard work! #teammoth

I normally hope for a White-letter Hairstreak nectaring early summer evening on my Hemp Agrimony. I wasn't expecting to see a Red-belted Clearwing instead in my VC20 garden! I do have a massive veteran apple tree though! #teammoth

A lot of moths in VC20, but far too many that can only be identified to a group! Another pug this morning, not new for garden, but Obsidentify says it is Yarrow Pug (it's big) - all previous records were confirmed by retention. I would like to avoid this? Any thoughts? #teammoth

This was hard to crack, took 7 days. Most VC20 Clearwing moths normally come to my garden lures, Hornet Moth (& Six-belted don't) even though the Poplars are close-by. Just before 9am to the API lure (also attracts the Hornet Moth so vice-versa?) I struck success a Six-belted Clearwing #teammoth 1/2
