getting rid of grades entirely would be much more effective at curbing surreptitious use of genAI than any amount of surveillance, would do vastly less harm to the pedagogical relationship at the heart of education, and wouldn't be another massive economic windfall for the creepiest people you know

“At UCLA, students in a recent sociology class said they were told in an email to ‘procure a mirror large enough to fully reflect your entire desk-area work space,’ and turn on their laptop camera so the professor could watch them during an online test.”

I owe a major debt of gratitude to @drtink.bsky.social & @writandrhet.bsky.social for giving me the push I needed to use negotiated grading this semester. I used a collaborative version (props to @empittsdonahoe.bsky.social) & it worked so well I don't want to ever go back to traditional grading.

Well, thanks a lot @drtink.bsky.social and @writandrhet.bsky.social. Your amazing #POD25 session, "Building Support for Negotiated Grading," has inspired me to completely rework my spring syllabus. Will be thinking of you both as I tear down & rebuild my Blackboard site!

1. I think it's 100% fair to be critical of the idea of being asked to spend extra time on AI Literacy as a teacher/professor 2. I think this is an absolutely ridiculous/unfair characterization of Mark's work, as he's consistently emphasized labor concerns for teachers/professors

Mark Watkins of the Chronicle of Higher Ed says faculty should spend 90 mins a week to teach ourselves about AI & unis are now sending out emails w his recommendation. I write here about the gift of having someone admit that automation intensifies labor sonja-drimmer.squarespace.com/blog-1/2026/...

Friends, if you're doing cool things around alternative grading in your classroom, your research, your teaching center, or your institution, we want to hear from you at The Grading Conference! It's held virtually June 16-18, and abstracts are due tomorrow. Link in the comments.

Graphic that reads "The 2026 Grading Conference is June 16-18. Posters, talks, workshops, and panel discussions all welcome! Abstracts are due February 13th. Scan the QR code for more information."

If you are working on course design this week, and you teach a lot of students, let me recommend this guest post on my blog from three fantastic instructors who are pursuing innovative grading methods in their large lectures. It's a lot of work, but alternative grading can be done in big classes!

I co-authored a post with @katiemattaini.bsky.social and Eden Tanner on @empittsdonahoe.bsky.social blog about Alternative Grading in Large Classes: emilypittsdonahoe.substack.com/p/alternativ...

Really enjoyed this conversation with Tricia Bertram Gallant on academic integrity and alternative grading. Give it a listen to hear me tell a story about myself as a high schooler and also lament the lack of support for grad students in higher ed! www.theoppositeofcheating.com/post/episode...
