Ya know how sometimes ya do a thing over & over again & you think it's weird, but you just do it anyway, and then suddenly it's explained in a way that makes sense and it's like: Eurika! I was today years old when I learned that what goes inside the () is different in pandas vs regular python. sigh

And now we learn that the acting NEH chair in fact recommended "that wherever the 'DEI Rationale' on the spreadsheet makes clear that there is no DEI component to the project, there is no justification for canceling the project's funding and you should allow it to continue. youtu.be/pX5_27IKRIg?...

Oh boy. A real doozy. If you haven't been following the @nehgov.bsky.social fiasco, this gift article will catch up up. If you have been following, prepare to have your rage stoked all over again. As one of the recipients of a cancelled grant, I have some thoughts /1 www.nytimes.com/2026/03/07/a...

Michael McDonald, acting chair of NEH at the time & still its General Counsel, admitted in a deposition he knew of fewer than 6 grants being revoked in 20+ years, all for non-performance. He co-founded the right-wing Center for Individual Rights, which files lawsuits > the Voting Rights Act. 2/2

My employer Canterbury Shaker Village lost a small NEH grant. I wrote it. I used words such as "equality" and "citizenship." The same words were used in CHATGPT to cancel grants. The same words are in the nation's founding documents.

Last year, this guy (left) from DOGE used ChatGPT to find NEH grants that were too “DEI” for Trump, and canceled them, including mine, as shown by the letter I received last April (right). Huge new NYT article on the back story link below

More evidence that what we have been witnessing is the hostile takeover of the government to advance the agenda of the few. There is nothing legal or just behind what happened in DOGE takeovers. Only the unscrupulous exercise of power to mislead and control the public for personal gain.

As someone who watched the careful stewardship of grants over many years, the lack of care and the dismissal of the hard work of scholars and NEH program staff described here is devastating and shameful. www.nytimes.com/2026/03/07/a...

It doesn’t matter how old you are or how long you have been do the work, getting an invitation to participate in an event with people you admire and respect lifts your spirits and keeps you afloat.

I spent the day growing the list of people I follow here: poets, small presses, and creative nonfiction authors. Looking for a community of folk who believe in the power of language, reflection, and connection to find hope and resilience.
