Indeed. ❤️ my Senator (most of the time. Yeah, he has positions that I oppose, c.f., Israel/Palestine). Between this and his excellent work on privacy rights, he’s one of the only olds that I’d like to remain in the Senate…for now. Can’t really say the same about Merkley, who is just kind of there.

I remember when REI closed its Portland store in 2023 and promoted the narrative that it was due to rampant crime and a bad business climate (to distract from REI’s own poor business decisions and union busting). It was all very useful to the RW propaganda machine. Screw REI, and good riddance.

The U.S. Secretary of Defense just stated that—so far—the war with Iran has cost $37.5 billion dollars. That's since February. That same amount is how much the United States spent on planetary science from FY2013 through FY2026 inclusive. Thirteen years of planetary science or five months of war.

The Curiosity rover on Mars. At about $2.6 billion, it buys you about ten days of Iran war.

The iconoclastic Alan Sprints of Hair of the Dog brewing died last night at 66. It is a huge loss not just for the industry, but for so many whose lives he touched. I wrote a long piece on Alan when he closed the brewery four years ago, and I’ll have a remembrance up later this morning.
