New obsession: Metazooa, a taxonomy guessing game. Each guess reveals the closest common taxonomic rank as you narrow in on the animal of the day. Nerdy, educational, and mildly addicting.

I'm reviewing abstracts for an upcoming scientific conference, helping the planning team to select which attendees get a chance to present their work. Some are amazingly good. Some suggest that the applicant has not ever been taught how to write an abstract. Here are some basic tips: 🧪

A harsh reality that I struggle to accept. “Fishes” still sounds weird to me, even if I know it’s right.
“Fish” can refer to a single individual, or multiple individuals from the same species. “Fishes” refers to multiple species. 🐠 Fish 🐠🐠🐠 Fish 🐠🐟🐡 Fishes

TODAY is the deadline to submit public comment on Trump’s proposal to rescind the Roadless Rule, which would expose 45 million acres of national forest to permanent roads and their attendant environmental ills. Register your disapproval here: www.federalregister.gov/documents/20... #roadecology
Weekend #FishPuke. This largemouth bass puked up a few soft plastic baits after I caught it. I pick up a few dozen of these baits off of lake bottoms each year, and apparently bass do too!
🔬 #LakeSuperior Speaks: Researcher Feature! UMD’s Dr. Mark Clark & Dr. Alec Lackmann will dive into lesser-known native fish of #Minnesota—and how tiny ear bones called #otoliths reveal their age, growth & life history. 🐟👀 📅 Register by July 10: z.umn.edu/mnsg_lakesup... #EduSky 🧪🍎
Who does this??? Enough people doubt science as it is 😅
You can't make this up: a researcher friend just had a paper rejected because the result was statistically non-significant. The editor said to try out different stats to get the p-value <0.05. That's NOT how science works. Non-significance is a legit result that is worth being communicated.
So many anglers in the Great Lakes region are shocked to hear that not all lampreys are invasive.
2-for-1 special! A few weeks ago, we caught a lake sturgeon with a bonus silver lamprey attached to it. Unlike their invasive cousins (sea lamprey) in the Great Lakes, this native species evolved to live in balance with various host species. #52FishyFridays 🐟🐠🌎
must be incredibly frustrating and disheartening to have federal funding that was promised to you for important work suddenly and arbitrarily ripped away
“In light of the President's statement about cancellation of my government contracts, @SpaceX will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately”
#FishPuke from this weekend during a trip to Voyageurs National Park. This smallmouth bass puked up a trout perch *with force* while I was unhooking it.
Hi all - Callout for help with class! I'm teaching an online course in fisheries conservation for UIUC this summer, and I'm looking to find a few more fisheries professionals/fish enthusiast academics to pop in over Zoom for a guest talk of the speaker's choice to the class! Anyone interested?

One week after my wife helped out with musky netting for work, she landed a musky of her own on the same lake on WI fishing opener while targeting pike and bass.
I really hope that content such as this reaches and resonates with hunters and anglers across the US. The downstream effects of the cuts to science and the people who do it will *definitely* impact mgmt of fish and game in all states. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/c...

Saturday morning out it the field. That's just what we do at outreach and extension, get the job done and help improve habitat. We're a bargain and a great investment. Not billing hours, just serving the public.
Check out our new WI Fishing Finder. Public access, boat ramps, regulations, habitat, stocking histories, consumption advisories and more, all in one map. We can’t find the fish for you, but we can help you decide where to give it a shot dnrmaps.wi.gov/H5/?viewer=WFF
