There has been talk about rewiring our constitutional arrangements, an ambition I applaud. But any electrician will tell you, if you get your wires crossed, you may be in for a nasty shock. The Lords is a kind of constitutional trip-switch, forcing a reset on bad laws. 🧵 4/5

So sad to hear of Ann Widdecombe's death. She was distinctive and wonderfully unconventional, with iron-clad principles, and brought her own perspective to everything. As a former colleague in government, her colourful individuality will not be forgotten.
