Land art created by the public land survey grid in conflict with topography and soil conservation. Along County X southeast of Disco, Wisconsin, in the northern Driftless Area. Sentinel 2 image from this spring.

A satellite image showing an area in which ridgetops and valleys are covered with agricultural fields interfingering with forest covered valleys. The grid of the Public Land Survey System is visible from field patterns on wider ridgetops but obscure elsewhere. Many fields and pastures have irregular shapes because they are on narrow ridgetops. There are also many examples of contour strips and grassed waterways in fields, both designed to reduce runoff and erosion.

The public land survey grid, as perfect as it ever gets, on the loess tablelands of south-central Nebraska. Almost every quarter section holds a center-pivot. In the top center is York, NE, with extensions along a range line, north to US 34 and south to I-80, both of which parallel township lines.
