Somebody tell me that Gandalf quote about the night being darkest the closest you are to getting your manuscript approved for publication.
For any fellow European researcher using Anthropic's API billing system (API, not the e.g. Pro account), have you been able to have your university's VAT number appear in the invoices? I can't make it work and without that, I can't use my research funds to do research 🙃
Unity in diversity remains a painfully unfulfilled ideal in the US and in much of the world – also in Spain. But at least for a night, amid the chants, klaxons and fireworks, one could hope that somehow it is still possible. My piece @theguardian.com www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Vamos España? Why this World Cup victory for Spain feels so different from the others | María Ramírez
The success belongs to many more people around the world from Gaza to Latin America – even if the collegiate spirit of the team has yet to be mirrored in our public life, says journalist María Ramírez

In 2010 I spent the world cup final watching a movie, alienated by Spanish nationalism. 16 years later, I went out with my family to celebrate in the streets of Lavapiés, the most mixed-nation spot in Madrid. It was beautiful to see so many different people wrapping the Spanish flag with love.

When reality surpasses fiction! Top: fictional forecast for August 2050, broadcast by French TV in 2014 to warn about the consequences of global warming. Bottom: Real French forecast for yesterday, June 22, 2026.
All I want from the universe is for the term "engagement" to have a decent translation in Spanish.

Imagine if a woman president crashed the economy and started a war with no end in sight, and her biggest, seemingly ONLY concern was building a ballroom and redecorating the White House.
Last night I dreamt of the past. The past and I had a beer, we walked on pasts cities and past campuses, we hugged and we cried.

Pay a fortune to attend matches, but instead end up as a foreigner in ICE detention without trial. Or stay at home for nothing and watch them on TV. That's a pretty simple choice. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/footba...

To all evil men of the world (and women, but let's be honest, the balance is def. men-tilted aka politicians): I wish you an afterlife where all you do is grade an infinite pile of AI-generated college papers. Which makes me wonder, what I did I do in my previous life to deserve this?!
A delayed response to a @caseynewton.bsky.social segment from Hard Fork last week: Casey’s right, I think, that the AI bubble is more like railroads than crypto. But we should also be thinking about broadband in ‘00 and housing in ‘08. davekarpf.beehiiv.com/p/what-sort-...
What Sort of AI Bubble Are We In?
Think broadband. Or, potentially, the 2008 housing market.

Early career scholar here.... what do y'all think is the right amount of reviews one should be doing a month/ a year? Like, I know it is (a very important) part of our job, but when does it become too much?
The National Science Foundation is the main source of funding for basic sciences in the US. For decades, they have supported a scientific R&D ecosystem in the US that has been an engine of economic growth and competitive advantage. Destroying the agency is no less than an act of sabotage.
That beautiful feeling of having taught the last real class of the semester 😚 (nevermind all the assignments & exams left to grade, we are not talking about that)
